Heat Revision Exercise 4 Class: 3__ Name: _________________

1.
Peter is enjoying Japanese hot pot. Initially, the pot contains 3 kg of water at 20 °C. When the water starts to
boil, he puts a piece of meat at 10 °C into the water.
(Take the specific heat capacity of the meat to be 3500 J kg−1 °C−1. The specific heat capacity of water is
4200 J kg−1 °C−1.)

(a) Find the energy required to raise the temperature of the water from 20 °C to 100 °C.
Ans: 1.01 × 106 J

(b) The power of the gas stove is 4000 W. Find the time required for heating the soup from 20 °C to 100 °C.
Ans: 252 s

(c) Explain why the meat is usually sliced into thin pieces.

(d) Shortly after putting the meat into the pot, the temperature of the water and the meat comes to the same
temperature of 98 °C. Calculate the mass of the meat.
Ans: 8.18 × 10−2 kg
2.
A student carries out an experiment to determine the specific heat capacity of copper, He heats the copper
block to 100 °C with boiling water (Figure a). Then, he places the block in a cup of water and measures the
temperature rise of the water (Figure b). (Given: The specific heat capacity of water is 4200 J kg−1 °C−1)

Fig. a Fig. b
The following results are obtained:
mass of the copper block = 80 g
mass of water inside the polystyrene cup = 150 g
initial water temperature = 18 °C
final water temperature = 21.5 °C
Find the specific heat capacity of copper assuming that the polystyrene cup has a negligible mass.
Ans: 351 J kg-1 oC-1
