Part two: Comprehension. (30 marks)
Read the following passage carefully, then answer the questions that follow it:
Satellites are space stations sent into orbit round the earth and other planets. Such
objetcs are sometimes called artificial moons. History's first satellite was Sputnik1,
launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. This in turn started the space race
between the Soviet Union and the United States. America felt threatened and thought that
the Soviet Union could do bomb attacks from space. Sputnik 2 was launched on November
3, 1957 and carried the first living passenger into space, a female dog called Laika. The first
American attempts failed to send a satellite. But finally, Explorer1 became the United States'
first satellite on January 31, 1958. Now there are in space hundreds of satellites owned by
more than 50 countries.
Satellites are used for a large number of purposes. They are used mainly for
communications, but some of them are used for directing ships and planes. They can be
2
used in scientific study of the earth and in wars. There are some regional satellites like
Arabsat, Nilesat and Saudisat, which support communications in Arab countries.
The largest satellite now orbiting the earth is the International Space Station, which
has been launched in parts and collected in space. Spacemen are sent there to be trained for
living in space for long periods of time. This station is the first step into building towns in
space in the future.
We can not imagine a world without satellites, because satellites control nowadays'
world, and have a great effect on modern life.

The nomadic tribes of Sudan traditionally resisted the idea of sending their

The teachers travel with their pupils and give their lessons in tents or under trees.
School subjetcs respect the nomadic life and customs. The local language is used in
