POLYMERIC COMPOUNDS
FOR PMA-DRY
MODIFICATION

11
INTRODUCTION

A POLYMER is a molecule with high molecular weight, consisting of

a chain of molecules with the same type of bond.

In function of MECHANICAL and RHEOLOGICAL

CHARACTERISTICS, the polymers are divided in:
• RIGID PLASTICS brittle behaviour;
• PLASTOMERS high mechanical resistances, tenacity and
high modulus;
• ELASTOMERS elastic behaviour.

They can be combined to obtain

DISADVANTAGES
• Need of dedicated plants for bitumen

• High viscosity even at high processing
temperatures: difficulties in production
and laying phases.
• Difficult storage stability.

PMA: POLYMERS ADDED IN THE MIXER

With PMA solution the Producer:

1. Does not need special trucks for the
transportation from refinery to production
site.
2. Does not need special and dedicated tanks
in order to maintain high temperature for the
bitumen storage.
3. Has less waste products - generally 5% of
PMB production is lost.
4. Avoids the storage stability, typical problem
of the PMB choice.
5. Has Flexibility in use and Cost reduction.

SUPERPLAST ADDED IN THE MIXER

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
SUPERPLAST is specially developed to be used in all layers (base,
binder and wearing course) and for application in heavily trafficked
areas as in Highways and Expressways. It can be applied for:

• High-durability wearing course for highly specialized pavements

such as highways and airport runways;
• Bituminous mix with high stiffness modulus for bitumen-bound
layers of pavements with long service life;
• SMA (Splittmastix Asphalt).
• Thin Layer;
• Layers in semi-porous bituminous mix.
21
SUPERPLAST ADDED IN THE MIXER

PERFORMANCES ACHIEVED

• High mechanical properties such as Indirect Tensile Strength,

Stability and Marshall Stiffness;
• Higher resistance to rutting ;
• High Stiffness Modulus, distribution of the stresses on a wider
base, with reduction of vertical deformations;
• Increase of Fatigue Resistance.

INCREASE OF THE SERVICE LIFE OF THE PAVEMENT

22
SUPERPLAST ADDED IN THE MIXER

BENEFITS
• Easy to use: no special equipment required, it can be used
everywhere, even in remote areas;
• Thickness reduction up to 35%;
• Overall reduction in the pavement cost by 20%;
• Savings in raw material, production, transportation and laying
costs;
• Savings in maintenance costs.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL
COMPOUND FOR THE MIXES
MODIFICATION

PPS (Polyfunctional Polymeric System) represents a new and revolutionary

policy of chemical-structural modification of bituminous mixes.
They are able to act simultaneously on several properties.
The adding system is also innovative and it allows the direct modification
of asphalt concrete, without modifying the bitumen.
