ACTIVITY 3

Multiple Images
Objectives:
1. Identify the relationship between the number of images formed and the angle between the
two mirrors.
2. Use the gathered data to derive the formula for determining the number of images formed
when two mirrors are kept at a certain angle

Materials.
Two plane mirrors, protractor, and small object

Procedures:
1. Place two plane mirrors at an angle of 90⁰ and place the small object between the two mirrors as shown in figure
1.

Figure 1: Two plane mirrors at 90⁰

1. Count the number of images formed. Record this in a table similar to table 1 below.
2. Try to vary the angle between the mirrors.

Table 1: Number of Images Formed

Angle Number of Images Formed
90⁰
60⁰
45⁰
30⁰

Question:
1. What relationship exists between the number of images formed and the angle between two mirrors?
_________________________________________________________________________________________
2. How Should the mirrors be arranged such that an infinite number of images will be formed?
_________________________________________________________________________________________
3. The number of images, N, can be determined using the formula N = 360/θ -1. (θ is the angle between the
two mirrors)
4. Determine the image formed by a given angle.
Question.
3. Using the equation, how many images are formed at ang angle of:
90⁰ = _______
45⁰ = _______
20⁰ = _______
