Paul wanted to see Maria. He wanted to talk to her.

Paul queria ver Maria. Ele queria falar com ela
I'll go to the house on the hill, he thought.
Vou para a casa da colina, pensou.
Perhaps Maria will be there.
Talvez Maria esteja lá.
But the house on the hill looked empty.
Mas a casa na colina parecia vazia.
There were no curtains at the windows.
Não havia cortinas nas janelas.
There was a big notice on the gate. It said "For Sale".
Havia um grande aviso no portão. Dizia "À venda".
Paul looked over the gate.
Paul olhou para o portão
There was nobody in the garden. Everything was quiet.
Não havia ninguém no jardim. Tudo estava quieto
I'll get into the house and look round, he thought.
Vou entrar em casa e dar uma olhada, pensou.
Perhaps I'll find Maria's address. Then I can write to her.
Talvez encontre o endereço de Maria. Então posso escrever para ela.
Paul pushed open the gate, and went up the steps to the house.
Paul empurrou o portão e subiu a escada da casa.
It was very quiet. He pushed at the front door.
Estava muito quieto. Ele empurrou a porta da frente.
It was closed. He walked round the house.
Estava fechado. Ele deu a volta na casa.
There was a window open.
Havia uma janela aberta.
Quickly, Paul climbed through the open window.

He was excited and his heart was beating fast.
Ele estava animado e seu coração batia rápido.
He was in Maria's old home! He remembered her mother.
Ele estava na antiga casa de Maria! Ele se lembrou de sua mãe.
He remembered that terrible evening.
Ele se lembrou daquela noite terrível.
But the house was different now.

There was no furniture in the room.

Não havia móveis na sala.
There were no carpets and pictures. It was empty.
Não havia tapetes e quadros. Estava vazio.
Paul felt a little afraid.
Paul sentiu um pouco de medo.
Is anybody in the house? he thought.
Tem alguém na casa? ele pensou.
No, he did not hear anything Quietly,
Não, ele não ouviu nada. Silenciosamente,
Paul went to the door of the room and opened it.
aul foi até a porta da sala e a abriu.
There was nobody there.
Não havia ninguém lá.
He went from room to room.
Ele foi de sala em sala.
All the rooms were big, and they were all empty.
Todos os quartos eram grandes e estavam todos vazios.
At last he came to a very big room.
Por fim, ele chegou a uma sala muito grande.
He stopped. He knew this room.
Ele parou. Ele conhecia esta sala.
He had met Maria's mother here!
Ele conheceu a mãe de Maria aqui!
He remembered everything, the old woman,
Ele se lembrava de tudo, a velha,
her hard face, the big rings on her hands . . .
seu rosto duro, os grandes anéis em suas mãos. . .
And now the old woman was dead.
E agora a velha estava morta
Suddenly, Paul heard a noise.
De repente, Paul ouviu um barulho.
Somebody was inside the room!
Alguém estava dentro da sala!
The door opened. Somebody was standing in the doorway.
A porta se abriu. Alguém estava parado na porta.
It was a woman. 'Maria!' said Paul.
Foi uma mulher. 'Maria!' disse Paul
'Paul!' Maria said. 'What are you doing here?'
Paulo!' Maria disse. 'O que você está fazendo aqui?'

'I was looking for you,' said Paul.

“Eu estava procurando por você”, disse Paul
'You were looking for me?' asked Maria. She smiled.
- Você estava procurando por mim? perguntou Maria. Ela sorriu.
'Maria,' said Paul. 'Why did you marry that man?'
"Maria", disse Paul. - Por que você se casou com aquele homem?
'Mother was old,' said Maria. 'I was unhappy here.
“Minha mãe estava velha”, disse Maria. 'Eu estava infeliz aqui.
I never went to parties, never went out. I wanted money.
Nunca fui a festas, nunca saí. Eu queria dinheiro.
I wanted a good time and friends.'
Eu queria um bom tempo e amigos.
'I understand,' Paul said. 'You were not afraid of your mother.
"Eu entendo", disse Paul. - Você não tinha medo de sua mãe.
You were tired of her.
Você estava cansado dela.
She was old, and you wanted a new life.
Ela estava velha e você queria uma vida nova.
But why did you leave your husband?
Mas por que você deixou seu marido?
'My husband?' said Maria. 'That fat old man! He was stupid, Paul.
'Meu marido?' disse Maria. - Aquele velho gordo! Ele era estúpido, Paul.
He gave me money. He gave me jewels, a car . . . everything.
Ele me deu dinheiro. Ele me deu joias, um carro ... tudo.
But he didn't like my friends. He liked old people.
Mas ele não gostou dos meus amigos. Ele gostava de gente velha.
I like clever, young people, Paul. I like you.
Gosto de jovens inteligentes, Paul. Eu gosto de você.
You understand, don't you?'
Você entende, não é?
'Yes,' said Paul slowly. 'I understand now.'
- Sim - disse Paul lentamente. 'Eu entendo agora.'
'I'm glad,' said Maria. 'I was unhappy about you, Paul.
“Fico feliz”, disse Maria. - Fiquei infeliz com você, Paul
I liked you. I liked your funny poems. . .'
Eu gostei de você. Gostei dos seus poemas engraçados. . . '
'My funny poems . . .' said Paul. He stopped.
“Meus poemas engraçados. . . ' disse Paul. Ele parou.
'You loved me, didn't you, Paul?' said Maria. 'Do you still love me?'
- Você me amava, não é, Paul? disse Maria. 'Você ainda me ama?'

'You are married,' said Paul. 'You have a husband.'

“Você é casado”, disse Paul. 'Você tem um marido.'
'But I don't love him,' said Maria quickly.
“Mas eu não o amo”, disse Maria rapidamente.
'I want to be free. I want to go to parties and enjoy myself.
'Eu quero ser livre. Eu quero ir a festas e me divertir.
Come with me. I have money now.
Venha comigo. Eu tenho dinheiro agora
We'll be happy together.' 'No,' said Paul. 'No.
Seremos felizes juntos. ' "Não", disse Paul. 'Não.
Everything's over.' Maria was angry.
Acabou tudo. ' Maria estava com raiva.
Her eyes were small and cold, and her mouth was thin and hard.
Seus olhos eram pequenos e frios, e sua boca era fina e dura.
Her hands were covered with big rings.
Suas mãos estavam cobertas de grandes anéis.
Maria looked like her mother.
Maria parecia sua mãe.
'I'm sorry Maria,' he said. 'I don't love you any more.
"Sinto muito, Maria", disse ele. 'Eu não te amo mais.
I loved you very much, but now everything is different. Goodbye, Maria.'
Te amei muito, mas agora está tudo diferente. Adeus, Maria.
'But you can't leave me,' said Maria. 'I want you.'
“Mas você não pode me deixar”, disse Maria. 'Eu quero você.
'Go back to your husband,' said Paul.
' “Volte para o seu marido”, disse Paul.
He looked at her for the last time.
Ele olhou para ela pela última vez.
Then he turned, and walked out of the room.
Então ele se virou e saiu da sala.
Paul left the house on the hill, and walked home. He was free.
Paulo saiu de casa na colina e voltou para casa. Ele estava livre.
I was a fool, he thought. Maria never loved me.
Eu fui um idiota, ele pensou. Maria nunca me amou.
How stupid I was! Maria is beautiful, but she is hard and cold.
Como fui estúpido! Maria é linda, mas é dura e fria.
She is like her mother. I loved Maria's beauty.
Ela é como sua mãe. Amei a beleza de Maria.
But I never loved Maria.
Mas nunca amei Maria.

It was a lovely evening. Paul felt very happy.

Foi uma noite adorável. Paul se sentiu muito feliz.
The door of the little brown house was open.
A porta da casinha marrom estava aberta
His mother was at home. She was talking to a pretty girl.
Sua mãe estava em casa. Ela estava conversando com uma garota bonita.
'Paul,' she said, 'this is your cousin, Elsa.'
"Paul", disse ela, "esta é sua prima, Elsa."
'Hello Elsa,' said Paul. He smiled.
- Olá, Elsa - disse Paul. Ele sorriu.
