I. Title of Material/Introduction:
In the previous module, you were able to identify the area of focus for your
research paper. You now know how to write the research title and the
research background. In this module, you will be required to state research
questions. You have also to present your statement of the problem. Activities
are provided in order to strengthen the mastery of the topic. You are also
encouraged to submit any outputs to your teacher depending on the agreed
manner of submission. The final output in this module is a statement of
research question.

II. Objectives:
Upon completion of this module, the learners are able to:
• state research question; and
• present written statement of the problem.

III. Vocabulary List

1. Research Question–the question around area of focus in the chosen field
to be studied and developed for the discipline being studied.

IV. Pre-Test:
Instructions: Rearrange the following steps in writing research questions. Use
numbers 1-5 with1 as the initial step and 5 as the final step.

Write research questions

Narrow down to a specific niche
Do some preliminary reading about the topic
Identify research problem
Choose a broad topic

V. Learning Activities:
In the previous modules, you were able to identify your area of focus for
your study. And keywords were also determined. These will help you
accomplish the succeeding activities. In this module, research questions and
scope and delimitations will be your main concern.

STATING RESEARCH QUESTIONS

According to Jessica Liu (2020), a good research question is essential to
guide your research paper, project or thesis. It pinpoints exactly what you
want to find out and gives your work a clear focus and purpose. She
recommends following the subsequent steps in developing strong research
questions.

3
1
• Choose a broad topic.

2
• Do some preliminary reading about the topic.

3
• Narrow down to a specific niche.

4
• Identify research problem.

5
• Write research question.

In the previous modules, you were able to perform the first four steps.
Now, your main concern is how you are going to write the research question.
It is important that you know first the characteristics of a good research
question. The diagram below describes what a good research question is.

Focused Researchable

Relevant Feasible

Complex Specific

4
A good research question is focused. It means that the idea is fixed at a
central point. This will help you concentrate on a certain premise of a broad
topic. Similar to being specific, focusing on a topic makes every step in the
conduct of a research easier. With focused problem, readers would get very
comprehensive and reliable information from the study.
Another characteristic of a good research question is researchable and
feasible. If the question can be answered by simply yes or no, it isn’t a good
research problem. And even though, you are able to identify the area of focus
of your study, if the literature and data needed in completing the research are
not available it is still a failure. So, see to it that it is researchable and
feasible. You need to think in advance. Can you sustain the conduct of the
study up to the end? When we talk about feasibility, time and finances are
only few of the considerations. A change in the study as early as these two
are already identified as problems, is highly encouraged.
Being specific and focused must not limit your study to being complex. It
means that your research problem must be defined by its versatility. It must
still address a wide range of area.
And lastly, the research problem shows its relevance not only to the paper
itself but to the body of knowledge and to the field it addresses.

Examples of Research Questions

Topic: Online Learning

Research Questions:
1. What issues and challenges on online learning are encountered
by the students and teachers living in the Cities of Bicol Region
during the implementation of Enhanced Community
Quarantine?
2. Is there a significant difference on the issues and challenges
encountered by the students and the teachers?
3. What program can be proposed based from the findings of the
study?

Topic: Human Resource Management Practices

Research Questions:
1. What are the human resource management practices of food
shops in Ligao City, Tabaco City, and Legazpi City along;
a. recruitment;
b. selection;
c. training and development; and
d. performance appraisal?

5
2. Is there a significant difference in the human resource
management practices of food shops in Ligao City, Tabaco City,
and Legazpi City?
3. What localized human resource management manual can be
proposed based on the findings of the study?

Topic: Effectiveness of Goosegrass Leaf Extract in Regulating the Blood

Glucose
Research Questions:
1. What is the hypoglycemic effect of Goosegrass (Eleusineindica)
leaf extract in hyperglycemia-induced Albino mice(Mus
musculus)
2. Is there a significant difference between:
a. Controlled group (3mL tap water) and Experimental group
(3mL Goosegrass leaf extract)
b. Controlled group (3 mL Metformin solution) and
Experimental Group (3mL Goosegrass leaf extract)

Activity 1. Research Problems

Instructions: Write at least two (2) research questions regarding your

identified topic(refer to the previous modules). Use the space provided below.

Activity 2: Presentation of Statement of the Problem

Instructions: Present the output with the group observing the agreed
manner of presentation. After the presentation, decide for your final output as a
group. The group may choose the best or may craft another set of research
problems based on the presentations conducted. The output shall then be
presented or submitted for critiquing. It may be in video, audio or written format.

Answer Key
Pre-Test:

5 Write research questions

3 Narrow down to a specific niche
2 Do some preliminary reading about the topic
4 Identify research problem
1 Choose a broad topic

Activity 1. Research Problems

Answers may vary. A contextualized rubric should be crafted to

assess students’ output

Activity 2: Presentation of Statement of the Problem

Answers may vary. A contextualized rubric should be crafted to

assess students’ output

Post- Test:

Answers should contain the correct order of the steps in writing

research questions plus the short discussion of each step. A contextualized
rubric should be crafted to assess students’ output
Assignment
The teacher should facilitate the submission of the outputs. Rubrics should
also be contextualized in grading the students’ outputs.
