The New World" Chapter 13

The assigned readings for this week included a wide range of topics relating to the history

of the United States, including the voyage of Christopher Columbus and the subsequent

interactions between European settlers and Native American communities. The history of the

Americas before to the arrival of Europeans is described in great detail in Chapter 1 of the

American Yawp, which I read. Learning about the myriad different communities that formerly

thrived in the Americas, all of which had their very own individual faiths, linguistic groups, and

cultural practices, was an enlightening and intriguing experience. The reading also demonstrated

the manner in which these civilizations were altered by the arrival of Europeans and the ways in

which their interactions with the newcomers influenced the progression of historical events in the

Americas. The reading also shed insight on the myriad of ways in which these encounters

molded the course of historical events in the Americas.

Native American Legends: Southeastern Legends by George E. Lankford provides a

fascinating look into the oral traditions and storytelling practices of Native American cultures,

and the readings from this book provide a fascinating view into such activities. Native American

Legends: Southeastern Legends is a fascinating look into the oral traditions and storytelling

practices of Native American cultures. The folklore and legends that were detailed in the book

offered the audience a novel perspective from which to investigate the cultural values and beliefs

that were upheld by these indigenous groups. It came as a great surprise to learn that many of the

tales contained in the book were centered on the concepts of reverence for the natural world and

the value of belonging to a group. This was without a doubt one of the most eye-opening parts of

the book.

Readings from Eric Foner's book Voices of Freedom: A Documentary History provided a

riveting perspective on the lives of enslaved people and members of other underrepresented

groups in the United States throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Voices of Freedom is a

documentary history. The readings included primary sources, which provided a first-person

perspective on the hurdles and obstacles that these communities had to overcome on their path to

liberation as well as the sufferings that they endured. These communities were able to overcome

these hurdles and obstacles and become free as a result of the readings. The experiences of

people who had to go through terrible treatment but yet managed to preserve their dignity and

keep their strength in spite of what they had to go through were really upsetting to read (Journal

of Christopher Columbus, 1492). It broke my heart to see how they overcame their ordeals.

In conclusion, I have found that reading Christopher Columbus's Journal from the year

1492 has assisted me in gaining a deeper comprehension of the mentality of the Europeans who

lived during that era, as well as how they saw the new continent and the people who lived there.

This is because the Journal was written by Christopher Columbus himself. It was interesting to

observe how Columbus' perception of the local peoples he encountered changed over time. It

was also interesting to see how his notebooks reflect the cultural and power differences that

existed between him and the people he encountered. It was also fascinating to observe how

Columbus' impressions of the indigenous peoples he encountered evolved throughout the course

of his explorations.
