15 min The teacher writes the following example on the board : x/2 x
Then explains to the students that in order to simplify algebraic fractions we have
to find a common number or expression in the denominator and numerator.
Solution:
1\ expand 2 x 2 to X.(2X) : X/ X.( 2X)
2\ look for any common expression in the denominator and numerator : X
3\ LET THE COMMON EXPERSSION CANCEL EACH OTHER OUT :
X/ X.( 2X) = 1/2X

-Example :3x/ x 2-2x


Solution :
1\ 3x/ x 2-2x : We factor the denominator by x
2\ 3X / X (X-2) Then we divide both( denominator and numerator )
by X
3\: 3/(X-2)

-EXAMPLE : (2 y 2-4y) /( y 2-4)


1\ we factor the numerator by 2y : 2y(y-2) /( y 2-4)
2\ we expand the denominator from ( y 2-4) to (y+2)(y-2) :
2y(y-2) /(y+2)(y-2)
3\ Then we divide both( denominator and numerator )
By (y-2) : 2y(y-2) /(y+2)(y-2) = 2y/(y+2) .
