Sub : Request for granting permission for visiting NRC for Banana, Tiruchirappalli

Niravu Farmers Producer Company (Ltd), established in 24th Nov 2016 is a Non-Governmental
Organisation (NGO) at Vengeri of Kozhikode district. We are the promoters of organic farming
in Kerala, and was named as the first organic village in Kerala. We are executing the Zero-
budget waste management along with Zero pesticide organic farming.

“Banana Bank” is a community based sustainable agriculture program of the Niravu farmers
Producer Company under the auspices of NABARD and Kerala Agricultural University. This is
a completely non- profit pilot project initiated with the objectives of germplasm conservation,
sustainable, equitable and profitable cultivation of banana for farmers, responsible farming
without using chemicals, safe and affordable food, promotion of value-added products from
banana etc. As part of this we distributed saplings of 30 varieties, including 15 indigenous ones
of Kerala, among the 200 households at the rate of 5 saplings per household.

In order to make this project successful we want to acquire knowledge about scientific and
sustainable farming practices. So we would like to get trained from the leading and prominent
institute, NRC for banana. Here we have attached some of the frequently asked questions by
farmers during the field visits:
1. What are the manures that can be applied, their quantity and schedule of application, in
organic production of banana?
2. In organic production of banana, what are the schedule of operations to be done for
prevention of pest and diseases?
3. What are the solutions for lodging problem (other than staking)?
4. What are the additional practices that we have to consider while cultivating tissue culture
banana?
5. What are the criteria for selection of good quality suckers from mother plant? How we
can ensure the yield as same as mother plant?
6. What are the value added products from banana that can be easily prepared with less
capital?
7. What are the post-harvest management practices in banana?
8. After bunch formation in banana, the plant can be made use of in composting. Is there
any machinery available to cut the plant into small proportionate pieces so that the speed
of decomposition is enhanced?

Hence, we humbly request you to provide an opportunity to visit the institute.

Yours faithfully,

CEO
