1. Purpose

 The purpose of this method statement is to define the general sequence of events and
responsibilities for carrying out Block Masonry for different buildings and the measures
adopted for safe and systematic completion of the same.

2. References

 Relevant British or American standards

 Approved Construction Drawings

 Project Specifications

3. Scope of work

 The scope of work includes block masonry of different buildings for Oman
Formaldehyde Chemical Company project at SIPC, Sohar.

4. Roles and Responsibilities

 Project Manager: Project Manager will be responsible for overall management of all
construction activities at site.

 Civil In-charge: Civil In-charge will be responsible for Block work at site including
coordination with other services and client.

 QA/QC Engineer: QA/ QC Engineer will be responsible for site QA/ QC activities,
material control and traceability, non-conformance management and compilation of
records.

 Civil Engineer: Civil Engineer will be responsible for the Block work and
implementation of all plans.

5. Quality control

 Material Test Certificates (MTC) of blocks will be reviewed to ensure comply of the
specification requirement.

 Visual and random dimensional inspection of blocks will be carried out as per the ITP.

 Block work will be checked before and after the work as per the checklist.

6. Safety precautions

 All the manpower involved in the job shall wear appropriate personnel protection
equipment like helmet, safety shoe, goggles, gloves, and nose masks.

 Before employing personnel at site, safety induction will be given and associated hazards
and precautionary measures involved in the job also briefed.

 All the electrical installations shall be enclosed properly and ELCB shall be installed to
prevent danger of electric shock. Only authorized electrical person is allowed to attend
any repair/maintenance.

7. Procedure

 Preparation of Mortar – Cement and sand will be in the proportion of 1:4 by volume.
Mortar will be mixed for a period of not less than 3 minutes in a mechanical mixer. Mortar
will be used within 2 ½ hours after the initial mixing and water has been added to the dry
ingredients. Mortar will be kept elastic & workable by retempering as often as necessary
to maintain the desired workability. Mortar, which has hardened or stiffened due to
hydration of the cement, will not be used.

 Concrete surface in contact with masonry will be hacked and surface roughened for
proper bonding. Loose aggregates & any thing that will prevent the mortar from bonding
to the foundation will be removed.

 The foundation will be checked for vertical and horizontal alignment, and any
discrepancies will be corrected before starting the masonry construction.

 The blocks will be dampened by sprinkling water before taking into construction to
prevent the absorption of water, in cement mortar, by the blocks.

 A Damp Proof Course of 3mm thick will be used between the beam and first layer of
block.

 Masonry units will be laid on a full bed of mortar and gently pressed so that mortar can
get into the space between two blocks to ensure good adhesion.

 Blocks will be placed in such a manner that it is matching with butterfly ties provided on
columns.

 As each unit is laid, the excess mortar extruding from the joints should be cut-off cleanly
with the trowel. Cross-joints and wall joints shall be flushed and packed with mortar to
prevent formation of hollow pockets. Mortar joint thickness will be approximately 10mm.

 Reinforcement bars will be used wherever applicable as per the table given at the end of
this procedure. 12mm thick vertical bars spaced at 0.80m and 10mm horizontal bar at
every 3rd layer will be used for reinforcement. The clear distance between the surface of
a bar & any surface of masonry will not be less than 15mm. Splicing of reinforcement will
be as shown on the drawings.

 Verticality of the wall faces and horizontality of the courses will be checked with plumb
bob and spirit level respectively. All aligning & plumbing of each masonry unit to final

position will be done while the mortar is soft. Where no bond pattern is shown on the
drawings, the units will be laid up in straight uniform courses with running bond pattern.
 Intersecting walls & corners of reinforced walls will be masonry bonded by overlapping
courses unless noted otherwise in the drawings. The rate of lying of masonry may be up
to a maximum height of 1.5m per day with suitable stepping at discontinued ends for
stability.

 Mortar joints shall be straight, clean & uniform in thickness. Horizontal & vertical mortar
joints will be 10mm thick with full mortar coverage on the face shell & on the webs
surrounding the cells to fill with grout. After a section of wall has been laid & mortar has
become stiff enough, all joints will be raked with a round bar to produce a dense, slightly
concave surface, well bonded to the block at the edges.

 Curing of the block work will be started and that will be maintained wet till it reaches
sufficient strength.
