A. Five (5) new terms that I learned from the reading and its definition.

1.Photon- is a tiny particle that comprises waves of electromagnetic radiation according LibreTexts
Chemistry.
2 Cysteine- is a non-essential amino acid important for making protein, and for other metabolic
functions according to University of Rochester Medical Center.
3. Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers - are the major lesions produced upon exposure of DNA to UVB
light according to ScienceDirect.
4. Photoreactivation- is possibly the simplest DNA repair mechanism currently known according to
ScienceDirect
5. Synergistic effects- are nonlinear cumulative effects of two active ingredients with similar or
related outcomes of their different activities, or active ingredients with sequential or supplemental
activities according.

B. Two (2) new concepts/ideas/theories that I learned from the reading.

 UV light can process with other techniques or milder conventional preservation methods in a
so-called “hurdle” approach to guarantee acceptable inactivation of pathogenic
microorganisms.

 UV did not damage the cell envelopes, but the number of injured cells was higher after a UV-H
treatment than after heating

C. What are the objective/s of the researchers in the article?

 The aim of this study was to compare the UV-C resistance of five Salmonella enterica subsp.
Enterica then used the most resistant strains to study the effects of treatment medium
properties, water activity and microbial factors.
 The aim of this study is to investigate the efficient of combined process of UV Light and mild
temperature or the inactivation of Salmonella enterica subsp.

D. How is it connected to our own study?

 This article, it’s connected to our study because we need some information on the
microorganism in food contamination and if the UVC Light will reduce some bacteria such as
Salmonella, Listeria, etc. And another thing if the temperature will affect the microorganism.
