NYMPHOMANIAC

CASE STUDY

Background

The confessional story of Joe, a traumatized, ashamed, and hypersexual woman, is told in the

film Nymphomaniac. When Joe awoke from her unconsciousness, she began to tell the story of

how being a Nymphomaniac severely damaged her life. An elderly man was discovered

excessively on the streets, severely beaten. He provided her with shelter.

Assumption

The movie shows how Joe, the lead character, has been affected by her sexual disorder since she

was two years old. The disorder starts in the fetus and lasts until the baby is born, according to

the voice-over that was used to explain it. Joe has had nymphomania, or excessive sexual

behavior, since he was two years old. She can smoke at a very young age, and she can’t control

it. Her father notices her growing interest in human anatomy. And as she tells something about

her dad, he also explains it, but with the interpretation of trees. And as her curiosity deepens,

whatever her father explains to her, she always wanders and tries it herself. Joe's sexual desire

began when she lost her virginity to Jerome. Her friend B was also an accessory to her disorder

because she made fun of

sexual intercourse with strangers. Joe was linked to many men until he met her again, and she

fell in love with Jerome, so she decided not to allow any more to touch her body; unfortunately,

Jerome left, and this is why his sexual desire was inclined. In volume 1 of the movie, I assumed

that having a husband could cure or at least prevent her from having excessive sexual desire, but

having watched volume 2 of the movie, I realized that having Jerome and her child was not

enough to give her satisfaction. He feels nothing when she overdoes sex, but her brain keeps on

telling her to want more. I also realized in this movie that she has no intimate relationship with

his father. Their bond is just that they have each other’s backs since her mother has no emotional

connection to her. Joe, while having sex with Jerome, is also having sex with some other men in

volume 2. And most of the time, Joe hated herself because she always had that she couldn’t

control.

Conclusion

After watching Volume 1 and getting a brief background on Volume 2, I can say that this

disorder is not easy, and if not treated, the person suffering from it may commit suicide or suffer

from a serious mental illness. I can also conclude that nymphomania is not under the influence of

nature, hence it is a pre-existence disorder, which means a person has nymphomania or excessive

sexual desire from the day she is born.

Recommendation

To prevent or reduce the triggers of Nymphomania, a person must first consult with a

psychiatrist to gain a better understanding of the disorder. To avoid mental health disorders such

as bipolar disorder, avoid self-diagnosis. To manage compulsive sexual behavior, nymphomania

should be treated with medications and psychotherapy.
