I. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CASE STUDY

Many groups have laid out the benefits and justifications for addressing

mental health. In order to understand how companies have altered the

focus of health enhancement to include the workplace mental health

and well-being prevention and interventions, a team from HERO’s

Workplace Performance Study and Committee set out to do some

research.

Anxiety and depression are common mental health problems that

affect working-age adults and are linked to deteriorating physical

health and lower work productivity. In given year, more than one in five

adults age 18 and older may have a mental illness of some kind and

many more will go misdiagnosed or continue to experience symptoms.

Not only are people with untreated mental health problems more likely

to have negative work outcomes like absenteeism and presenteeism,

but they also have worse outcomes from common medical conditions

like diabetes, respiratory illness, and musculoskeletal disorders, which

raises the cost of health care.

Additionally, loneliness at work, or a diminished sense of affiliation or

connectedness, can have a negative impact on productivity as well as

the mental health and well-being of employees.

Think about the relationship between your performance and your own

mental health.

You approach your work with good mental health when you're in good

emotional and mental health. You're versatile, adaptive, and strong.

Challenges are something you can manage. Your team benefits from

the important contributions you provide, and both your personal and

professional lives are successful.

However, even if it isn't severe, having mental health issues at work

can have a detrimental impact on your job in a number of ways.

The days of not talking about mental health are gone. Or, at least they

should be. Positive mental health is important because it allows

individuals to cope with challenges, even good ones, and setbacks in

their lives, both at work and at home.

Positive mental health at work helps teams remain agile when

changing roles and responsibilities. Not to mention facing difficult

challenges. It helps employees flourish in their roles, manage

stress, and boosts resilience. Ultimately, it allows each individual to

reach their highest potential.

With all these accolades it is important that workplace mental health is

discussed. Creating a safe space for employees at all levels to

communicate openly without discrimination is crucial. Without this, you

risk losing out on valuable feedback that could help you retain valuable

talent.

II. TIME CONTENT

Mental health disorders are among the most burdensome health

concerns in the United States. Nearly 1 in 5 US adults aged 18 or older

(18.3% or 44.7 million people) reported any mental illness in 2016.

Employees with untreated depression have a 35% decrease in

productivity, according to data provided by the American Psychiatric

Association, which costs the U.S. economy $210.5 billion annually in

lost productivity, absenteeism, and medical expenses.

Strategically prioritizing the well-being of employees 1.4 million people

are served by Essex County Government (ECC), a sizable county

council with more than 7,200 workers.

Being the best local authority in the nation is something that ECC

aspires to be, and cultivating a "healthy, content, and resilient

workforce" is seen as essential to accomplishing that goal. The goal is

to establish a wellbeing culture that is promoted throughout the

company, which will enhance everyone's employment experience.

The council's five-year, prevention-focused Wellbeing Strategy was

introduced in September 2020. The council conducted focus groups

and a wellbeing audit while the strategy was being developed to make

sure it took into account the needs and opinions of its workers.

III. SITUATIONAL CONTEXT

The fact that shame and stigma surrounding mental health still exist

is one of the biggest challenges our society faces. As a result,

many are reluctant to discuss these difficulties and, in some cases,

are afraid to seek treatment for mental health problems.

It is crucial to realize that mental illness affects people from all

genders, cultures, races, religions, and socioeconomic

backgrounds.

According to the World Health Organization, 300 million individuals

worldwide suffer from depression, and many of them also show

signs of anxiety. In fact, depression is the primary cause of

disability internationally.

Numerous symptoms of depression include:

 Losing enthusiasm for most or all activities

 Changes in appetite or sleep patterns

 Having trouble staying focused

 An attitude of worthlessness

 Ideas of suicide

Given the signs and symptoms of depression, it stands to reason

that depressed workers miss an average of 31.4 days annually and

lose an additional 27.9 due to inefficiency. Additionally, given the

BULACAN STATE UNIVERSITY SARMIENTO CAMPUS

high prevalence of depression in the world, it is likely that your

company employs people who are depressed and could use your

support.

Five negative effects of poor mental health in the workplace:

1. Lack of engagement with one's work. Poor mental health

leads to demotivation and lack of focus. When we have

workplace mental health issues, our minds wander or fixate

on our problems, making it difficult to regulate our thoughts

and emotions.

2. Productivity and job performance suffers. High

performance is mental strength in motion. Poor mental

health can reduce job performance since it makes accessing

the behavioral skills that foster creativity and resilience all

the more challenging. Without these skills, we don’t have the

psychological resources to perform well at our jobs.

3. Reduced physical capability and daily functioning. From

social anxiety to a reduction in cognitive performance and

working memory, poor mental health takes a major toll on

your daily living and physical capability.

4. Misaligned communication. It’s difficult to communicate well

when we’re emotionally not feeling well. Poor mental health

may lead to misinterpreting or over-reacting to colleagues. It

may come across as speaking with a passive-aggressive

tone, being a poor listener, or having a negative attitude.

5. Poor decision-making. Poor mental health can lead to a lack

of impulse control, unhealthy thoughts, and poor decision-

making. Poor decision-making may lead to missed meetings,

showing up late, dropping commitments, or not adhering to

company policies.

IV. STATEMENT OF CRITICAL CONCERN

 A shift work, lack of flexible scheduling, unsupportive

management, and strained working relationships can all contribute

to poor employee mental health.

 Bullying and a lack of support for stress management were two

problems that simultaneously impacted the productivity and mental

health of personnel.

 For ethnic minorities, the link between poor employment quality

and bad productivity and mental health may be stronger.

 Working from home led to an increase in productivity loss,

whereas unreasonable time constraints led to a drop.

 Poor mental health and emotional distress in the workplace are

problematic for companies for a number of reasons.

Poor mental health at work can result in:

 Disengaged employees

 Poor communication

 High turnover

 Safety liabilities

 Poor job performance

 Low productivity

 Poor decision-making

 Decreased profits

V. AREAS OF CONSIDERATION

As a business owner:

The most important thing an employer can do is provide resources for

people who require clinical treatment as well as those more general

mental health needs.

It is crucial to provide employees with mental illness with access to

clinical care.

The majority of workers, however, require mental health support rather

than clinical care.

Employees frequently require assistance with coping mechanisms,

stress management, and resilience building during challenging times.

It’s critical to improve their entire mental health if you want them to be

productive team members as well as happy individuals.

As a worker:

Employees can push companies to provide stress management

training and mental health programs that suit their needs and interests

in order to enhance mental well-being at work.

In case the need arises, employees should be aware of the policies

around how to take a mental health day off from work.

Managing Stress at Work

Make sure to review staff workload on a regular basis.

 Sit down for a productive talk if you discover that a typically

upbeat and friendly colleague starts being glum or

BULACAN STATE UNIVERSITY SARMIENTO CAMPUS
Brgy. Kaypian, City of San Jose Del Monte Bulacan
abnormally combative, or if you observe changes in

performance, such remaining past the call of duty or making

mistakes. The sooner you recognize the problem, the sooner

you can start fixing it.

Taking pauses lowers stress and boosts performance.

 Encourage workers to take periodic breaks during the

workday. This can entail going for a stroll, reading a book, or

conversing with a buddy. It's critical for workers to take a

break so their minds can regroup. Contrary to what many

individuals believe when they are stressed, taking pauses

increases productivity.

Everyone benefits from a healthy diet and regular exercise.

 Promote regular exercise among your staff. Ironically,

exercise is frequently neglected even though it is one of the

most effective coping mechanisms for boosting energy and

lowering stress. Regardless of how anxious and stressed out

someone is, a brisk 20-minute stroll will probably help.

 An additional strategy for lowering stress is to maintain a

balanced diet. Maintaining a balanced diet of foods that

provide a more stable source of energy (instead of that

sugar rush) can be a fantastic first line of defense against

the negative effects of stress. Many people find that they

lapse into "mindless eating" when their minds are full of

worries and stresses.

VI. IMPLICATION

A shared goal of the workplace is to implement and sustain activities

for mental health and well-being responsibility. The success of the

organization depends on all of its level.

Supportive and caring leadership demonstrates the organization’s

dedication to the value of employee mental health and well-being.

Recognizing psychosocial risks at work is crucial first step in finding

ways to enhance worker’s mental health and well-being.

Initiatives for mental health and well-being are continually reviewed

and evaluated at all organizational levels to make sure resources are

still useful and efficient.

Ensuring that employees have access to their preferred form of care

when they need it by providing and promoting access to high quality

behavioral health care, including remotely provided evidence-based

routes.

Including these services in a through wellness program may also

improve overall health outcomes. Community collaborations give

groups a wider audience and more resources, as well as new chances

to work together and contribute to the solution.

VII. DECISION

There is no actual decision or any legal procedure on this case except

on the fact that it is need to give importance for workers in able to be

productive, regain them self, boost confident and learn to control self’s

emotion and mentality.

VIII. OUTCOME

The first step in promoting good mental health at work is to be aware of

the whole spectrum of experiences that employees have with their mental

health. Companies that support and advocate for mental health for those

who are struggling or who are simply not thriving benefit all of their

employees.

Companies can set an example by de-stigmatizing the subject of mental

health and considering their position in society more broadly. By

emphasizing strategies that enhance workers' personal and professional

growth, in addition to offering assistance and access to clinical care for

those who need it most, we can redefine mental health.

Companies can offer their employees the greatest mental health programs

with awareness, innovation, and support.

Best practices for organizational mental health and well-being are

developed and maintained throughout time through a continuous process.

Which best practices can be applied when and how will depend on

organizational criteria including size, work type, and funding. As a

company expands or as its workforce changes, the size of initiatives may

also shift.

Just get started if you are just starting to incorporate mental health and

well-being activities at your organization and are unsure of where to begin.

Decide on one workable best practice. Track development. Determine

success.

Brgy. Kaypian, City of San Jose Del Monte Bulacan
If best practices are currently in use at your company, keep going to make

your efforts stronger. Adapt efforts to the demands of the workforce. Track

development. Determine success. Inform other employers about the

outcomes.
