HOW IS THE FILM’S DEPICTION OF

“I feel like there’s a representation
of so many different people in these
characters. Things have changed,
definitely, we’ve come a very far
distance, but there are still many
stigmas and reservations attached
to gay male identity and this piece
goes to the heart of that. What does
it mean to accept yourself as a gay

“Donald is the long-suffering, ever-

HOW IS THE FILM’S DEPICTION OF
GAY RELATIONSHIPS IN THE 1960S
RELEVANT FOR GAY PEOPLE TODAY?
“It’s important to understand the
context. It’s months before Stonewall
erupted a few blocks away from where
the movie takes place. These men had
no role models to look to as an example
of how to be, how to live. Thankfully, we
live in an age now where our community
can say, ‘I’m going to be OK. I can have
this life if I want.’ Whereas these men
are all trapped together in a space
society has imposed on them.”
WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT
YOURSELF?
“There are aspects of Donald I relate to.
He’s looking for something, he’s trying
to make better decisions, he wants a
great relationship with Michael — maybe
more — but knows that’s only ever going
to happen if he’s sober. He’s in this
deep analysis but still exposing himself
to toxic environments. He’s trying to
leave the city and its temptations, but
he is living with his parents, who are his
greatest source of pain. He is looking
to find a better life; he just doesn’t
know how to find it. There are aspects
of that that I struggled with in my
twenties. There weren’t a lot of people
in the entertainment industry who
were openly gay and successful, and I
was trying to be my authentic self, and
exposed myself to toxic environments
because I didn’t know any better — I
didn’t have the self-love at the time.” PLAYBACK: Director

TAKING ON THE ROLE?
“The only apprehension I had in the
past is having played a lot of femme
gay characters, sometimes the optics
get very reduced because sometimes
people think being femme or femme
gay is only one story and there isn’t
diversity within that, or layers. But I’m
over that. Straight guys never have to
worry about playing straight, but as a
gay man, only playing gay can still be
incredibly diverse.

I
t’s nearly 20 years since a handsome 22-year-old man won what was then the
nation’s biggest TV talent show and then promptly came out — one of the first
celebrities to do so at the beginning of their career. Since then, Will Young has
continued to be one of the most popular performers in the country, releasing
a string of hits from seven studio albums (four of which went to number
one), appearing alongside Judi Dench in Mrs Henderson Presents, and winning
plaudits for his appearances onstage.
But underneath the success and glossy pop videos, Will was struggling with
low self-esteem and compulsive behaviour. I first met him when I was deputy
editor of Attitude back in 2002, and then again in 2009 as editor, when he guest-
edited an issue of Attitude. I didn’t know then that both of us were struggling with the
trauma of having grown up gay in a world which had invalidated us.
Since then he has become an anti-bullying and mental health advocate and has talked
about the nervous breakdown that he suffered out of the public eye.
I wrote my book about gay shame, Straight Jacket, and discussed this with Will on his educated 22-year-old, someone who did
podcast, Homosapiens, in 2016. This month, he releases a new memoir talking about actually know his mind, and they didn’t
