II. Overview
The Republic Act 9258 or the Guidance and Counseling Act of 2004
recognizes the important role of guidance counselors in nation-building as
it is embodied in Sec. 3, of the same Act. This learners Packet helps you
get familiarize and be guided to a deeper understanding on the Principles
of counseling. There are also authors like Gibson and Mitchell (2003) who
enumerated the roles, functions and work settings of a counselor.
III. Activities
Activity 1. These are the things counselors should not do. On the other
box, write down the things a counselor must do.

ACTIVITIES FUNCTIONS

and potential of every client;
promotes the client’s self-

through a third party or helping
system improve its service to its
clientele
8. It is necessary to advance the
profession of counseling; it can
provide empirically based data
relevant to the ultimate goal of
implementing effective counseling
9. Evaluation is a means of assessing
the effectiveness of counselor’s
activities. Accountability is an
outgrowth of demand that schools
and other tax supported institutions
be held accountable for their
actions
10. This includes promotion of mental

health through primary prevention using
a social – psychological perspective.
Activity 3.
Directions:
1. In the column found at the extreme left of the matrix are the
