2. Analysis

We are in a very busy world where we cannot resist but to communicate.

We always engage in communication either face-to-face, using a telephone,
cellphone or email. In whatever means we use in communicating with our
loved ones, friends, colleagues and superiors, we certainly have a purpose in
doing so.
Our intention for communicating may vary such as to control someone to
do something, to socialize with peers, to motivate a classmate to perform
better, to inform a friend about future plans, to express how we feel about the
situation, to share information about an article we read, to give instructions on
how to operate a gadget, to ask for advice on handling an avid admirer or to
persuade someone to participate in a worthy endeavor.
The following are the four functions of communication:

1. Regulation or Control
2. Social Interaction
3. Motivation
4. Information

1. Regulation or Control

It refers to giving orders or directions, making requests or

attempting influence the actions of others and accepting or
refusing directions.

The list below specifies the communicative acts that can be

found under regulation function.

a. Making suggestions in which the speaker is included

Example: We should observe and follow rules inside the
laboratory room
b. Making requests, making suggestions and recommendations
Example: I would highly recommend Doctor Mae
Montemayor to be your eye specialist.
c. Refusing to accept a suggestion or a request but offering an
alternative
Example: That’s a good point but I think we should ask for
more ideas from our team members.
d. Persuading someone to change his point of view
Example: You should change your study habits for you to
excel more in our class.
e. Requesting and granting permission
Example: Can I attend the Research Forum next month?
f. Asking for help and responding to a plea for help
Example: You can talk to Engr. Montefalco with regards
the blueprint of this building after his meeting.
g. Forbidding someone to do something; issuing a command
Example: You are not allowed to enter the operating room
while the procedures are going on.

h. Warning someone
Example: Do not touch the chemicals.
h. Discouraging someone from pursuing a course of action
Example: You must not overthink things for it will make you
uneasy and bothered.
i. Establishing guideline and deadlines for the completion of
actions
Example: You can take the entrance examinations once
you completed all of your requirements.

3. Abstraction

What is the purpose of regulation or control being one of the functions

of communication?

4. Application

Read the dialogues below and underline the expressions/sentences that

show regulation or control.

Dialogue A.

Patient: I have stomachache and loose motions since last night. I

also vomited few times in the night.
Doctor: What did you eat yesterday?
Patient: I ate some snacks on the roadside eatery. It’s likely a result
of that.
Doctor: Most likely, you ate contaminated food. Because of
diarrhea, you’ve lost plenty of body fluids. You need to be
hydrated. Drink water regularly. Mix some Glucon-D
powder or Electral in it. Fruit juice is fine too. Avoid
caffeine, dairy products, and solid foods at least till
evening. And get plenty of rest.
Patient: Any medicines, doctor?
Doctor: Yes, I’m prescribing few to control diarrhea. (Writes
prescription for the patient). Take this medicine twice a
day, one tablet in the morning and one in the evening.
Patient: Thank you, doctor.
Doctor: You’re welcome. If you’re still not feeling fine after 1-2
days, please see me here in my clinic.
Patient: Yes doctor, I will.

Dialogue B.

Student: Good morning Sir De Leon. May I come in, sir?

Teacher: Yes, but please stand here for a while. Why do you always
come late?
Student: It is the bus which makes me late, Sir.
Teacher: What time do you leave home?
Student: I always leave home at quarter to eight.
Teacher: How far is your home from here?
Student: It is about three kilometers from here.
Teacher: That is why, you get late. You leave your home very late.
Student: Sir, I take my breakfast at 7:30 a.m.
Teacher: What time do you get up?
Student: I get up at about 7:00 a.m.
Teacher: Don't you offer your prayer?
Student: Not regularly.
Teacher: My dear, I suggest that you must change your routine. Always
get up early in the morning. Offer your prayers and go for a morning
walk.
Student: Sir, there is no park near our home.
Teacher: No problem. You can walk along the street in the morning time.
Take breakfast at right time and then leave for school.
Student: You are right, sir. Starting tomorrow, I shall never be late.
Teacher: Good. Keep in mind that regularity and punctuality conquer the
mountains.
Student: Thank you very much for your good advice.
Teacher: You’re welcome. You can take your seat now.
