COURSE OUTLINE IN ENGLIS PLUS-GRAMMAR 1E & 1G


COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course aims to improve the English language proficiency of College Freshmen by learning critical grammatical structures necessary for communicative functions such as narrating,
describing, giving directions, etc., and to acquire adequate vocabulary needed for academic study. The learner will master fundamental gramm ar concepts and apply this knowledge to
written documents, oral speaking skills, and the End-of-the-Course Assessment.

OBJECTIVES

1. To acquire adequate vocabulary needed for academic study through various strategies.
2. To learn the critical grammatical structures necessary for communicative functions such as narrating, describing, giving directions etc.
3. To develop the ability to see the grammatical relationships between words, group of words and sentences within the discourse level.
4. To develop the ability to use the cohesive devices to come up with a meaningful discourse.

II. Parts of Speech
a. Preliminary exercises on Subjects and Predicates, Nouns, and Verbs
b. Pronouns, Adjectives, Adverbs
c. Prepositions, Conjunctions, Interjections,
III. The Sentence
a. Subjects and Predicates Continued; the Complete Subject and Complete Predicate
b. Predicate Nominative and Predicate Adjective ; Direct and Indirect Objectives
c. The Fragments; Types of Sentences; Review of Sentences
IV. The Phrase
a. Prepositional Phrases; Adjectival Phrases and Adverbial Phrases
b. Verbal Phrases; Participial, Gerund, Infinitive
c. Appositive Phrases; Review of Phrases
V. The Clause
a. Independent and Subordinate Clause
b. Types of Subordinate Clause
VI. The Paragraphs
a. Understanding Topic Sentence and Support

Grading System:

Examination - 50%
Class Standing - 50%

Attendance 10%
Recitations 15%
Quizzes 15%
Individual Output 10%

Attendance Policy:

Attendance shall be strictly observed. Absence of nine (9) cumulative hours may be allowed on valid grounds; provided, that the student shall present proof in case of medical
and similar reasons. Tardiness of 90 cumulative minutes shall be equivalent to one (1) absence, unless prior notice was sent and consent obtained from the professor.

PHILIPPINE LITERATURE IN ENGLISH


First Semester, AY 2018-2019

Course Description:
This is a three-hour per week course which surveys short stories, poetry, essay, drama and other literary works in English by Filipino authors from the pre-historic to the present periods.
It shall highlight works by the Palanca Awards in Literature winners and the National Artists for Literature.

Objectives:
This course generally aims to expose the college students to the rich repertoire of Philippine Literature written in English. Specifically, this course aims to develop among the students
the critical skills in reading and analyzing literary texts, to bolster their appreciative values and sense of pride towards the Filipino culture and ideals, and to promote habitual and
discriminating taste in reading works of Filipino authors.
