Concepts and Relevance of Assessment
Pretest.
Rectify the following misconceptions. Explain in two or three sentences why they are
incorrect.
Evaluation and assessment are both used to review the performance of an individual but
these two terms are used in a completely different context. When we say assessment, it is an
ongoing process done to understand, review and improve the performance of someone or
something through objective measurements and observation and is process-oriented which
focuses on improving the process, evaluation, on the other hand is more on a final process done
to judge the performance being manifested and is product-oriented which focuses on the quality
of the process. To sum it up, assessment’s findings shows areas that need improvement while
evaluation’s findings shows the overall score.
Every grading period, assessment is precisely not completed as what its goal shows that
assessment aims for student-learning improvement which means that assessment doesn’t end
through just simply grading. Assessment is deeper than grading as it searches for possible ways
on how to improve educational practices.
3. Assessment is one-way.
Assessment is not one way wherein teachers simply give feedback on students’ works.
The most effective thing to do is to initiate a dialogue between the student on what he/she
learned about the topic and the teacher assessing the areas that need to be emphasize. With this
two-way assessment, teachers can identify the learner’s progress and can have a very active
class, giving student a voice to express their learning.
4. Assessment is ultimately for grading purposes.
Assessment is ultimately not for grading purposes only though teachers use this to grade
student’s knowledge but as I said earlier it is not ultimately for grading purposes only.
Assessment helps teachers to determine whether the goals of education are being met, unfolding
the areas where the students have misunderstanding of a certain topic so it is not really for
grading purposes only but for improvement of the student’s performances.
Meaningful Assessment
As a college student, you underwent several assessments in basic education. Recall from
your own personal experience an assessment that you think was truly meaningful to you. Explain
why it is so. Explain the nature and purpose of that particular assessment.
