GOOGLE WILL BE THE DEATH OF LIBRARIES

How often you visited the library in the past months? And how often you pulled up your phone to
surf the internet? I am most confident the answer to the first question is never or rarely and the
answer to the second question is everytime

Some people already claim libraries to be a quaint relic of a forgotten age. And the main reason
behind this is the quick, anywhere, anytime access to Google.

The latest Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy figures on library closures are dire.
In the past five years 343 have gone. Librarian numbers are down by a quarter, with 8,000 jobs lost.
Public usage has fallen by 16% and spending by 14%. Book borrowing is plummeting, in some places
by a half.

Assamualaikum and good day.

My name is ain and today we’ll be discovering on why some people claim that google will be the
death of public libraries

Recent statistics released by OCLC’s Perception of Libraries, 2 do bear out the assertion that users
rely heavily, if not exclusively, on Internet search engines for information search tasks.  Their survey
showed that 84% of respondents reported starting a search on a search engine, and not a single
respondent reported beginning on library websites

(De Rosa et al., 2011, p. 32).  If libraries have traditionally been the gatekeepers of information
people need, how do they maintain relevance in this new information-seeking paradigm?

specific purpose: to inform audience on why advancement in technology would lead to decrease in
library purposes

central idea: Google are overtaking library's function and less people prefer visiting library each day

thesis statement: three main reasons for this are busy lifestyles, people's preferences to refer online
sources rather than physical books and abundance of reference on the internet

so what exactly is causing our library to lose its popularity? Well they are many reasons for this but I
have picked what I thought is the two most prominent cause that sparked this issue

first and foremost

main idea 1: busy lifestyles causes the people to visit library less because they simple lack the time
do so

and this applies to all layers of society. childrens are occupied during the week and needs to attend
schools, grown adults are often more occupied with other stuff such as office work and housework.
This drew the society away from visiting the libraries. Its not rare to hear about university students
going to library but it was always for the sake of finding a quiet place to study

this time constrain causes less people to opt for library as a source of information and convert to
using google to search for online sources
It cuts the transportation cost and communication requirements. Say no more to traffic jams. Say
goodbye to overwhelmingly high transportation fees. With google, youre only a click away from
accessing the internet.

You can sit at your home and go through the information without asking anybody about it. You can
be in your pajamas, lying by your bed or in the toilet even

Sure, all these reasons seem more so on why google would be the first thing that came to mind went
we wanted to find useful information but without us realizing, this is the main reason on why our
libraries are now

main idea 2: people thinks that using book cause inconvenience and -wasting time due to its hand-
operated nature

some people got too comfortable with accessing information online rather than refering to physical
books in this era. some people find skimming through a thick book a hassle when they can just type
into the search boxes to find what they want

Moreover, it facilitates quick decision making. Going to libraries and reading a whole lot of books can
take months. Why do so when you can get the exact result just from a click on your computer
screen? Thus, it helps you save those months and make speedy decisions.

Feature like searching up specific words on ebook also helps people to find the exact page where the
information should be at. They also not lacking on other useful features like bookmark, annotation
and tabbing. Devices that support reading such as kindles also avoid the inconvenience of carrying
multiple thick book around because files can be stored in a single usb drive.

main idea 3: there are a lot of website that serve free sources of reference e-book, all in one place.
people feel easier to access the information they wanted just from the tip of their fingers

Libraries might lose its value and existence for students who are young and don’t love to spend time
on reading. For them, Google is like a treasure which has the solution to all the academic problems
they face. But think of a professional librarian and an advocate. You think they will even be able to
survive if libraries vanish? It is mundane for them to consider libraries as a physical collection of
books The public library is no longer a church sacred to knowledge. Its walls have been blasted
open, its uniqueness gone. It cannot live in a romantic past, a place where books go to die.

Nick Poole, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Librarians and Information Practitioners,
issued a warning saying the UK should expect 340 more library closures in the next five years unless
things change. The same number of libraries have closed across the UK in the last eight years.

“Google can bring you back 100,000 answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one.”

This issue may seem like something trivial to some people but to some others, they hold this issue
dear to their heart. Library is one of the proof that humanity strive to learn and educate themselves
to make a better future. Hence we can just give up on them although technological advancement
had taken over certain role they used to play in our life.

I would like to end my speech with a word from a famous English author, Neil Gaiman, “Google can
bring you back 100,000 answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one.”

Thank you
