Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat
Salt, fat, acid, heat is a very interesting take on the art of cooking, by using four
elements to define how food can be made or broken. The author, Samin Nosrat,
being a very experienced chef, aims to, in her book, showcase in her book how
four elements are the fundamentals of cooking, whereas in her show, as what I
have gathered from the trailer, she aims to travel the world to confirm this.
theory, of how four elements can make or break a certain dish or meal.
The trailer shows Nosrat travel to the home kitchens of Italy, the southern
islands of Japan, the heat of the Yucatan, and to Berkeley's Chez Panisse
where she began her culinary career ~- to explore the central principles of what
makes food delicious and how people can easily incorporate the elements into
every dish they make,
‘The text given seems to a bit bland, with no specific emotions or any essence to
the writing. It is the home page of her website, and it basically introduces her
life, in short, to us.
The trailer showcases a wide range of emotions, from excitement, to giddiness.
It flows smoothly, with each scene having an impact on the audience, making
them feel welcome. Each scene seems to be different, with different people,
locations, food, and a feel of warmth the audience feels, as a way of showing
someone's perspective in the most welcoming way possible
The text given to us does not include anything mentioned above. It gives a
vague description of where she was born and brough up, where she learned to
cook, some details regarding her socials, and on the top, some buttons to visit
her podcast, buy her book, etc. The text doesn’t seem to have any emotions, as
it was probably intended.
The trailer seems to be very different, Especially on the camera techniques used.
With panning, to different transitions, it makes us feel almost like a pleasant
dream, where everything we like is happening to us, except in this case it’s
about her and food. The camera techniques also showcase a unique feeling of
being there with her, and especially the narration makes you feel like you are
there, traveling, experiencing with her.Clearly, the audience for both the given texts are different. The first is just a
generic text, that expects the audience to already know something about her,
which is why the information is so little, whereas the trailer introduces
everything from scratch. About where she is from, where she is going, it
showeases everything with a certain essence of excitement and joy. It is
intended towards a more generic audience, to attract as many people into
experiencing this world vast world of food and how to cook it
The first and second texts are very different, and this is apparent from the
begging, as their intents are very different. One is more of a short welcome into
her website, whereas one is an introduction into her life, and showcase of her
love of cooking and food, Each one serves their purpose, although it can eb
argued that both can eb improved, as can almost everything in the world. The
first text could feel slightly more energetic, but afart from that, it is very good in
performing it’s intended role, whereas the second one, being more for the
general public, to get them interested into a world most do not pay heed to, is
filled with many more emotions, and thus, fulfils it’s role extraordinarily,
