Lesson Exemplar in Mathematics 9

(General Linear Model- 5E`s Methodology)

I. Objectives: Given several activities, students can do the following with at least 80
percent proficiency:
a. apply the laws involving positive integral exponents to zero and
negative integral exponents;
b. illustrate expression with zero and negative exponents;
c. play “Unggoyan” to simplify expression with zero and negative
exponents;
d. write a feature article regarding, “Zero and Integral Exponents
Around Us”.
II. Subject Matter: Zero and Negative Integral Exponents
Reference: Learners Mathematics 9 Module
Teachers Mathematics 9 Module
Time Frame: 1 Session
Date and Time: April 22, 2021
Skills: Critical Thinking and Cooperative Learning
Materials: Laptop, Projector, and Manila Paper.

III. Learning Plan

1. Engagement

ACTIVITY: Is it a Fact or a Bluff? (Group Activity)

Directions: Identify whether the given statement is a fact or bluff.

1. Zero divided by any number is zero.

2. One divided by any number gives a fractional answer.
3. A number divided by itself is 1.
4. 10m6 divided by 2m10 is 5m-4
5. Any number added to 0 is the number.
6. Any number raised to a power of 0 is 1.
7. Any number multiplied by 1 is the number.
8. An expression with a negative exponent CANNOT be written as an
expression with a positive exponent.
9. b5 ● b3 is equal to b8.
10. (-23) = 8.

2. Exploration

ACTIVITY: What`s Happening? (GROUP ACTIVITY)

The teacher will let the students use the Photomath application that can be
downloaded via Google play store.

Directions:
Complete the table below and observe the pattern. The first row is
done for your reference.
.
Column Column Column Column Column Column Column Column
A B C D E F G H
0 -1 -2 -3
4 1 4 ¼ 4 1/16 4 1/64
0 -1 -2 -3
3 3 3 3
20 2-1 2-2 2-3
10 1-1 1-2 1-3
(1/2)0 (1/2)-1 (1/2)-2 (1/2)-3

3. Explanation

The teacher will ask the following based on the activity above.

1. What have you observe from column B?

2. What happens to the value of the expression if the exponent is equal to
zero?
3. If a certain number is raised to zero, is the number same if another number
is raised to zero? Justify your answer.
4. What do you observe from column D, F, and H?
5. What can you say if an expression is raised to a negative integral
exponent?
6. Do you think it is true for all numbers? Cite some example.
7. Can you identify a pattern for expression or number raised to negative
exponent? What is your pattern?
8. What do you think is zero raised to zero?
9. Can you identify a pattern for expressions or numbers raised to negative
integral exponents? What is your pattern?

4. Elaboration

The teacher will show a video about Zero and Integral Exponent.

5. Evaluation

ACTIVITY: The Pair Cards (Group Activity)

Mechanics:
1. The students will be playing “The Pair Cards” game similar to well-known
card game, “Unggoyan”.
2. Every group shall be given cards. Select a dealer, who is at the same time
a player, to facilitate the distribution of cards. There must be at most ten cards
in every group.
3. After receiving the cards, pair the expressions. A pair consists of zero
exponent and negative integral exponents and their equivalent answer when
simplify. Then, place and reveal the paired cards in front.
4. If there will no paired cards left with each player, the dealer will have the
privilege to be the first to pick a card from the player next to him following
clockwise direction. She/He will then do step 3. This process will be done by
the next players’ one at a time.
5. The game continue until all the cards are paired.
6. The group who will finish the game ahead of others will be declared the
“WINNER!”

IV. ASSIGNMENT

The students can also choose to submit their output via Google form thru this
website:

ACTIVITY: I`m a Hilltop Views writer! (INDIVIDUAL)

The Hilltop Views, the official school publication of San Luis National High
School is looking for a new original articles for its edition on the topic Zero and
Integral Negative Exponents around Us. As writer, you are required to submit your
own article or feature.
The output will be evaluated by the chief editor, feature editor and the school
paper adviser of the publication. They will base their judgment on the accuracy,
creativity, and mathematical reasoning, and organization of the article.
