Layers of the Earth

• If we could take a chunk out of the Earth, we would see that it Physical Properties and Composition
is made up of different layers.
• Composition= what it’s made of

• Physical properties= characteristic that is

unique and helps to identify the substance
(temp, size, shape, color)

• Example: Chocolate Chip Cookies

Composition- flour, eggs, sugar, chocolate, chips, baking

CRUST (1ST LAYER OF THE EARTH)

It is a shell on the outside of Earth, accounting for less than 1% of
Earth's volume. It is the top component of the lithosphere, a division of Earth's
layers that includes the crust and the upper part of the mantle. The
lithosphere is broken into tectonic plates whose motion allows heat to escape
from the interior of the Earth into space.

The crust lies on top of the mantle, a configuration that is stable because
the upper mantle is made of peridotite and so is significantly mor dense than
the crust. The boundary between the crust and mantle is conventionally
placed at the Mohorovičić discontinuity, a boundary defined by a contrast
in seismic velocity.
2 Types of Crust


 outermost layer • Oceanic Crust: ocean floor, Basalt, thinner than cont. crust
 thinnest layer (5-70km thick),

MANTLE (2ND LAYER OF THE EARTH)  Very dense

The mantle is the mostly-solid bulk of Earth's interior. The mantle
lies between Earth's dense, super-heated core and its thin outer layer,  4000 miles from surface
the crust. The mantle is about 2,900 kilometers (1,802 miles) thick, and  33% of Earth’s mass
makes up a whopping 84% of Earth’s total volume.  About the same size as Mars

CORE (3RD LAYER OF THE EARTH)
Earth's core is the very hot, very dense center of our planet. The ball-
shaped core lies beneath the cool, brittle crust and the mostly-solid mantle.
The core is found about 2,900 kilometers (1,802 miles) below Earth's surface,

and has a radius of about 3,485 kilometers (2,165 miles).
