Festival Assignment - Makar Sankranti 2022-23

Makar Sankranti is a harvest festival. Every year Makar Sankranti is
celebrated on 14th or 15th January. This is the only festival that follows
the solar calendar and hence it falls on the same date almost every year.
 On the auspicious day of Sankranti, the sun transits to the Tropic of
Capricorn from the Tropic of Cancer. It heralds a change in season, as
from this day, the Sun begins its movement
from Dakshinayana (South) to Uttarayana (North) hemisphere and the
days start getting longer and nights shorter.
 It is celebrated to mark the end of winter and beginning of spring.
 Crops like rice and pulses are harvested and farmers
celebrate it as a mark of their success. It is celebrated in
all parts of India but with different names.
 On this auspicious day of Makar Sankranti, devotees
believe that a ritual bath in the holy rivers washes away
all sins.
 Tilgud laddoos or sesame sweets infused with jaggery
are made particularly during this festival.
 People fly kites all day long on this day as it is a healthy exposure to the early morning sun. The
sunlight also helps in getting rid of skin infections and diseases.

Dear Parents,
 Instead of just taking a holiday, let’s teach children about the festival. It spreads harmony & laughter and enhances
knowledge that will imbibe the spirit of love & brotherhood. In this present world, to develop communal harmony, you
be the change maker and let the children be the agents of change.
 Let us all take a small initiative and promote the different unique SDGs to establish a better future by the year 2030. Do
research on different SDGs mention in the assignment to understand them better and contribute in the positive
change.
