Verona, Italy. Verona is a city in northeastern Italy. In Shakespeare's lifetime, it was part of
the Venetian Republic, but until 1405 it had been an independent city-state. The Verona of
Romeo and Juliet seems to be independent and with its own prince, who authorizes and
enforces local laws.

It is a tragic love story where the two main characters, Romeo and Juliet, are supposed to be
sworn enemies but fall in love. Due to their families' ongoing conflict, they cannot be
together, so they kill themselves because they cannot cope with being separated from one
another.

Romeo and Juliet is written from the third person omniscient point of view. The play's focus
moves between various characters, showing their perspectives, thoughts, and motivations.
The narrator never directly engages with the audience using first person language like 'I' or
'me'.
