Motion
What is projectile motion?
Projectile motion is a motion in which an object is thrown near the earth’s surface, and it moves along the curved path
called trajectory, under the action of gravity only. The primary force acting on a projectile is gravity. This doesn’t
necessarily mean that other forces do not act on it, just that their effect is minimal compared to gravity.

● In a Projectile Motion, there are two simultaneous independent rectilinear motions:

● Along the x-axis: uniform velocity, responsible for the horizontal (forward) motion of the particle.
● Along y-axis: uniform acceleration, responsible for the vertical (downwards) motion of the particle
What the formula for
projectile motion?
The equation for the distance traveled by
a projectile being affected by gravity is sin(2θ)v2/g,
where θ is the angle, v is the initial velocity and g is
acceleration due to gravity.
The point O is called the point of projection; θ is the angle of
projection and OB = Horizontal Range or Simply Range. The
total time taken by the particle from reaching O to B is
called the time of flight.
Variables in Projectile Motion Equations:

𝑣𝑖 ⃗ = initial velocity

𝑣𝑖𝑥 ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ = horizontal initial velocity

𝑣𝑖𝑦 ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ = vertical initial velocity

𝑥 = horizontal displacement

𝑦 = vertical displacement

𝑎𝑥 ⃗⃗⃗⃗ = horizontal acceleration

𝑔 = vertical acceleration

𝑣𝑓 ⃗ = final velocity

𝑣𝑓𝑥 ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ = horizontal final velocity

𝑣𝑓𝑦 ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ = vertical final velocity

𝑣𝑅 ⃗⃗⃗⃗ = resultant velocity

𝑣𝑥 ⃗ = horizontal velocity

𝑣𝑦 ⃗⃗⃗ = vertical velocity

𝜃 = angle of release

𝑡 = time.” —
