Dear Friends,

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany – the word

‘epiphany’ comes from the Greek epiphainein which means ‘to show’ or
‘to reveal’. For today’s celebration shows to all the nations of the world,
all peoples – the identity of the Child born in Bethlehem on Christmas
day. Jesus’s identity is revealed by the gifts which the wise men,
the magi bring him.

Gold shows us that Jesus is a king; frankincense was burnt to honour

princes or triumphant military leaders or Roman magistrates; and myrrh
was a bitter resin often used to embalm the dead, especially noblemen.
So, these three gifts can be seen to point to the royal dignity of the
Christ Child, to His political status as a king and mighty ruler.

Also, on Epiphany the priest traditionally blesses chalk that is used to

inscribe the following blessing above the doors of homes:
20 + C + M + B + 23
The numbers represent the new year. The initials C, M, B, have a two-
fold meaning. They are the initials for the traditional names attributed
to the Three Magi—Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar—but they also
stand for the Latin phrase, "Christus mansionem benedicat," which
means "Christ bless this house”.

May we also generously offer to Jesus, the gold of our obedience to

God’s will; the incense of our prayer and adoration; and the myrrh of
our daily deeds of humility, self-abnegation and sacrifice: our heart,
our will, our life.

Yours sincerely in
Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
Fr. David
