THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the Introduction, Background of the study, Theoretical Framework,

Conceptual Framework, Statement of the problem, Hypothesis, Assumption, Significance of the Study, Scope,

limitation, and delimitation of the study, and Definition of Terms.

INTRODUCTION

Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the good strands that students can choose when entering

senior high school. However, each HUMSS student’s behavior is different, there are hot-tempered, quarrelsome,

naughty, mischievous, kind, and helpful. Every student has his own skills such as being good at writing, good at

communication, creative etc. But what exactly can the Humss strand do, it is important to know the ability of

the Humss strand, what it can do and what impact it has had on each student. According to (Senior High

School), n.d. 2021), the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand provides Students from a wide range

of disciplines use their experiences and skills to investigate and question human situations through the study of -

behavior and its social changes using empirical, analytical, and critical methods. HUMSS develops the

necessary knowledge and skills to bring about positive change through the study of social science theories and

concepts, community-based realities, cultural, social and political studies, discussion of issues moral. I want
others to be aware of the possible effects of the Humss strand on students, that the Humss strand is no joke

either, because when others hear the Humss strand, they immediately think "that's easy", that's what I want to

change , I want them to know what is the beauty of Humss strand for students. This is important because for us

to know the importance and beauty of the Humss strand, According to (Senior High School | Systems Plus

College Foundation, n.d. 2021), will give every learner a deeper understanding of culture, politics, literature,

arts ,and society - how these factors' complexity is appreciated during the pressing issues concerning them, by

studying at Humss Strand, their life skills can be changed and improved and they can learn a new strategy on

how to communicate with other people fine. If other people know the importance of the HUMSS strand and if

they know how it benefits students, that’s a very good knowledge for those who think that the HUMSS is for

those who are “lazy to study, made easy” they can still be encouraged because of the good net impact on

students, And lastly, this research will breakdown and summarize the hindrances of selected grade 12 students

of Arellano University Andres Bonifacio Campus school year 2021-2022 on the impacts of HUMSS strand.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Humanities and Social Sciences is a strand in Senior High School (SHS). It is beneficial to the

students who are with low confidence and self - esteem, because the topics in this strand revolves around

improving the student’s writing, reading and speaking skills. This is a strand choose by students who are

aspiring to become members of society dealing with a lot of people. The Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMSS) strand shapes senior high school students with the necessary skills and knowledge on humanities and

social sciences like psychology, sociology, and more. Our students reap the benefits of a HUMSS strand by

developing skills like communication, open-mindedness, and a good understanding of the sociological and

cultural nuances of the world around them. From there, they can examine and analyze how these shape and

mold society’s ideas and ideologies in media, art, politics, and more (Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS)

Strand | OEd SHS, 2022). Students often hear about the Humss strand, saying that it is easy, that there is no

thrill, and that the Humss strand is only for students who are weak in math. That's what you often hear from

other people, so other students are embarrassed because that's what others know about the Humss strand, which
is not true, of course when you tell a student that, of course they'll be sad, say something about Humss strand,

especially now that there is a pandemic, the students are taking online classes, what will be the effect on them,

because others prefer face to face classes because they can be taught better and they really appreciate their

teacher, if it is online there is still teaching going on but not enjoying it anymore, that's what I want to give an

answer despite the pandemic brought by COVID 19 what will be the effect of Humss strand on Grade 12

students.

SETTINGS OF THE STUDY

The study was conducted at Arellano University (AU), a non-sectarian, private institution of higher

learning in Metro Manila, the Philippines. According to en-academic.com (2022), Florentino Cayco, Sr., the

first Filipino Undersecretary of Public Instruction, established it as a law school in 1938. The university bears

Cayetano Arellano's name, who served as the country's first Chief Justice. Arellano University was chosen as

the study's venue because it offered the best opportunity to locate the required participants, Arellano University

students in Grade 12 for this particular study. However, as a result of the epidemic, the researchers were unable

to do field research; as a result, they have reacted by conducting their research via.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The study was all about how Humss Strand affects as students in Arellano University. We investigate

whether the field of study influences the political attitudes of German university students. We disentangle self-

selection from learning effects and find systematic differences in political attitudes among incoming students

across eight fields of study. In the second step, we investigate how students' political attitudes change as they

advance in their academic training. Only studying economics has a clear pro-market impact on political

STATE OF THE PROBLEM

The study was directed towards its main objective of making an assessment regarding on

The Impact of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strands on the Grade 12 students in

Arellano University. Specifically, the researchers sought answer to the following question:
 1. How may the profile of Humss Strand Students be described in terms of:

1.1 age

1.2 gender

1.3 grade level

2. What are the perceptions of students-respondents on how it will affect to them as a

Students in Arellano University?

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of political and social views to HUMSS

Students?

ASSUMPTION

The study will take place in Arellano University Bonifacio campus Pasig, Philippines under the

supervision of Mrs. Mary Jane C. Villanueva an expert in Practical Research 2.

The researchers decided to conduct a research in Arellano University Bonifacio Campus Pasig,

Philippines for further investigation for The Impacts of Humanities and Social Sciences strand to the social and

political views of Grade 12 students in Arellano University

 HYPOTHESIS

The following null hypothesis was tested in this study

-The profile of Humss Strand Students be described in terms of grade 1.3 grade level

-There is no perception of students-respondents on how it will affect to them as a students in Arellano

University.

The following null hypothesis was tested in this study

-There is no advantages and disadvantages of political and social views to HUMSS students.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study will focus on the effectiveness of Humanities and Social Sciences on Grade 12

students. A survey questionnaire was made to gather the perceptions of the respondents. The respondents of the

study are only applied to Grade 12 students of Arellano University during the school year 2022-2023.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study “The Impacts of Humanities and Social Sciences on the Grade 12 students in Arellano

University” would benefit different groups:

Students. Students who are currently taking up Humanities and Social Sciences as their strand. The

results will show us how effective Humanities and Social Sciences is.
 Teachers. Teachers have a moral and obligation to enhance teaching the learning process of the study

through limited face to face classes/online class. This study may learn to know how effective Humanities and

Social Sciences are. Also may serve as a guide to them as professional teachers.

Parents. Parents will serve as a guide to the students because they can see what their child is doing

during online class. They could guide their children do better in their specific field.

Future Researchers. They can benefit from this study as it will serve as a ready-made basis, additional

knowledge for them and can be used by as their related literature for their studies in the future.
