Welcome Message from General Co-chairs

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome you to the 9th
International Conference on Communications and Networking in China (CHINACOM 2014),
a great opportunity for exchanging ideas and forming linkages.

Recent advances in communications and networking research continue to fuel the

information technology revolution and to permeate every sphere of society and business.
New ideas and inventions persist to bolster novel technologies and services, such as Cloud
Computing, Green communication, Internet of Things and Heterogeneous Networking,
which is becoming integral parts of modern communication infrastructures.

The aim of CHINACOM is to bring together Chinese and international researchers and
practitioners, from over the world, to exchange original ideas and share R&D advances in
communications and networking. CHINACOM has become one of the major events in these
areas in the Asia-Pacific region. It has been successful in encouraging interactions among
participants, exchanging novel ideas and disseminating knowledge.

Following the great success of the past CHINACOM2006-2013, CHINACOM2014 will be

held in Maoming, China, from 14-16 August 2014. The conference received 249 submitted
papers, out of which 90 papers were selected as full papers, 32 papers were selected as
working-in-progress papers, and 24 papers were selected as posters. The acceptance rate for
full papers is strictly controlled as 36.14%.

It is a pleasure to announce the three keynote speakers, who will present their vision of
wireless communication system in theory and practice: Prof. Vincenzo Piuri, Universitàdegli
Studi di Milano, Italy, on “Biometric Technology and Applications”, Prof. Nei Kato, Tohoku
University, Japan, on “D2D: Research Trend and Future Perspective”, Prof. Hanna Bogucka,
Poznan University of Technology, Poznan, on “Small Cells Deployment in TV White
Spaces”, and Tutorial Speaker Prof. Jiankun Hu, University of New South Wales, on “Cyber
Security Fundamentals and Open Research Issues” .

We would like to thank the TPC Co-Chairs, Symposiums Co-Chairs, TPC members, all the
reviewers, the Web Chairs, the Publication and Publicity Chairs and all the members of the
organizing committee, for their assistance and efforts to make the conference successful. The
continuing sponsorship by EAI and the IEEE Computer Society, the strong support of
Industrial Security and Wireless Sensor Networks Laboratory, Guangdong Provincial Key
Laboratory on Petrochemical Equipment Fault Diagnosis, Guangdong University of
Petrochemical Technology, China, is gratefully acknowledged. We also express our
appreciation to the conference keynote and tutorial speakers, paper presenters and authors.
We look forward to seeing you at the conference and hope that you will enjoy the
presentations, networking and your stay in Maoming, China.

Keynote Topic: Biometric Technology and Applications

The use of biometric traits for security and secure applications (including personal identification, access control,
forensics applications, e-commerce, e-government, and e-health) is receiving an increasing attention. The main
reason for such an interest is that biometric features of individuals are tightly bound with their identities.
Moreover, they cannot be easily forgotten or lost. Therefore they provide significant potentials in applications
where both security and client convenience are needed. This keynote introduces the biometrics theory,
technologies, and applications, with specific emphasis on a comprehensive system design methodology which
takes into account the application requirements, including the need for privacy protection.

Keynote Topic:D2D: Research Trend and Future Perspective

As driven by the proliferous development of media-hungry handheld devices and online applications, there has
been an unprecedented consumer demand for faster and cheaper mobile broadband usage. Given the impossibility
of meeting this demand by adding spectrum, researchers around the whole world are bending over backwards to
squeeze out more data bits from the limited available frequency resources. Among various efforts towards this end,
device-to-device (D2D) communication which allows mobile UEs in proximity to communicate directly via
licensed/unlicensed band with/without the support from the operator, has gained intensive research interests from
academia, industry, and standard bodies. In this talk, we present the opportunities for D2D to improve system
capacity, enhance spectral efficiency, and increase coverage and connectivity, and identify the new challenges to
co-existence and network management. In particular, we introduce our [Relay-by-Smartphone] concept and
implementation for traffic relaying collaborating with UAS, and for load balancing in LTE-Advanced networks.
Finally, we outline some research directions in the future wireless network.

Keynote Topic: Small Cells Deployment in TV White Spaces

The transition from analogue to digital television (DTV) largely finished in many countries has resulted in new
kinds of unused spectrum. Owing to the need to manage interference between transmitters of the DTV
multi-frequency systems, the typical network plan creates pockets of unused spectrum which is interleaved in
frequency and space; a common term for this spectrum is TV White Spaces (TVWS). Small cells (pico- and
femtocells) in cellular networks are envisioned as a method of traffic offloading in densely populated areas. They
are supposed to cover small areas up to 200 m (picocells) or in the order of 10 m (femtocells), and therefore
transmission power requirements in small cells are also moderate or low. Small cells can share frequency channels
with macro cells, however interference between small cells and a macrocell is an issue. Moreover, uncoordinated
spectrum sharing between small cells may cause interference between them, what further degrades the quality of
service and the benefit of small cells deployment. TVWS provide an opportunity for such a deployment due to the
fact that small cells meant for densely populated areas require low power. This keynote will address the problem
of using TVWS for extending the capacity of future heterogeneous wireless networks, such as LTE and LTE-A
networks in small cell scenarios.
