“Kendama” is a toy made with a cross-shaped “Ken (sword)” and a holed

“tama” (ball). In Japan, there is even an official competition of the Kendama
techniques which is organized by the “Japan Kendama Association”, and it has become
a hot topic for a while. It will be a good exercise as kendama is played by using kness
and thighs, as well as fingers.

B. Let’s practice a conversation using the old and new expressions that we’ve learned and used
today.

Note: “Yatta!!” connotes a strong feeling so the last syllable is accented and prolonged and “ureshii”
can be added to express the feeling of succeeding in something. “Jouzu and Sugoi” was introduced in
Topic 16 session 2.
C. After doing the activity, let’s summarize and confirm the meaning of the old and new
expressions that we used based on the given cues.
● When you want to cheer for your friend: ganbare!
● When you want to compliment someone for doing well: jouzu!/sugoi!
● When you feel “dokidoki suru”, w hat do you want to hear from your classmates:
ganbare!
● When you succeed in doing something, how do you express your feelings: yatta!
