Origin of Life Position Paper Notes:

First Theory:

Reducing Atmosphere - atmospheric condition in which oxidation is prevented by removal of oxygen and
other oxidizing gases or vapors, and which may contain actively reducing gases such as hydrogen, carbon
monoxide, and gases such as hydrogen sulfide that would be oxidized by any present oxygen.

Second Theory:

Impact Theory - Essentially, the force of the asteroids slamming into the Earth would cause the
formation of new hydrothermal systems all over the planet. These systems would provide both the
venue and the necessary chemistry for life to arise.

Third Theory:

Deep-sea Vents - submarine cracks in the earth’s surface where superheated water rich in transition-
metal ions and hydrogen sulfide mixes abruptly with cold sea water

Other Notes:

Abiotic Synthesis
Stanley Miller and Harold Urey
Electric Discharge Synthesis Of Amino Acids
Strecker Reaction (aldehydes, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia)
cyanoacetylene – Sanchez and Ferris
adenine- Oro and Kimble
The Urey–Miller experiments were widely accepted as a model of prebiotic synthesis of amino acids by
the action of lightning

Organic Carbon in meteorites

Wächtershäuser
Nickel and Iron Sulfide could reduce carbon dioxide
Iron sulfide and Hydrogen are reducing agents, but they cannot reduce CO2
