 Understand which drivers are supported by which operating systems

 Install the print driver on Windows and Mac OS computers.
Troubleshooting
Top issue: Selecting and installing print drivers
Customers frequently search for information about selecting and installing the correct print
driver for their printer. The topic is listed as the top issue for most HP LaserJet products.
The printer-specific support site has links to documents that list the recommended print
driver and provide links to download the software.
The documents are also available in WISE.
Links to the following documents are also included in the Additional resources PDF in the
course library:

 HP LaserJet - Driver and software support for Windows 7

 HP LaserJet - Driver and software support for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
 HP LaserJet - OS X 10.9, 10.8, and 10.7 support

The printer requires either the printer-specific print driver (Windows and OS X) or version
5.9 or greater of the HP Universal Print Driver. Earlier versions of the UPD do not support
some features.
See the printer Service Manual or the printer support site for additional troubleshooting
procedures.
Check the installed print driver
Some features might not be available or work correctly if the incorrect print driver is
installed. Check the installed printer to make certain that either the printer-specific print
driver or the appropriate version of HP UPD is installed. Avoid using in-OS print drivers for
this printer.
1. Open the Devices and Printers control panel.
2. Right-click the printer icon.
3. Select Printer properties from the pop-up menu. The properties window
displays.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. Verify that the proper print driver is displayed in the Driver area. In-OS print
drivers usually include the word Class in the name of the driver.
6. If the installed print driver is not correct, select the proper print driver from
the drop-down menu or click New Driver... to install the new print driver.
7. If necessary, install the print driver from the In-Box CD, or download the print
driver from the printer support site or www.hp.com/go/upd.
NOTE:
Links to videos showing how to automatically upgrade the UPD and using the
HP Driver Configuration Utility are in the Additional Resources PDF in the course
library. The videos are available to support and service agents as well as
customers.

HP Embedded Web Server overview

All HP LaserJet printers include the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS). Use the EWS to
remotely monitor printer status, check supplies, and change printer settings.
The EWS is available whenever the printer is connected to an IP-based network. The
network does not have to be connected to the Internet. The EWS is not available for USB-
connected printers.
Tabs across the top of the EWS interface arrange features into groups such
as Print and Security. The number of tabs varies depending on the printer features and
capabilities. Each tab has a frame on the left that lists the available features. Click on a
feature to display the available settings in the main frame.
IMPORTANT:
Click the Apply button at the bottom of the screen to save changes. Sometimes it
is necessary to scroll down to the bottom of the window to see the button.

1. Open a Web-browser window, type the printer IP address or host name in

the address field, and then press Enter.
2. The EWS does not require a password by default. It might be necessary to
sign in with a user name and password if an administrator has secured the
EWS.
Learn more about the EWS in the Web-based training course HP Embedded Web Server
(EWS) Fundamentals Training.

EWS Tabs and menus

The printer capabilities and the version of HP FutureSmart firmware loaded determine

Set the paper size and paper type

The paper size or type loaded in each tray can be designated by the customer. A paper
type or size can be selected within the print driver. For example: By setting a tray
to Letterhead, a user can select the Letterhead option in the Paper type: drop-down
menu in the print driver, and the printer will automatically pull paper from that tray. The
person printing the job does not need to know which tray the letterhead paper is loaded in.
While in the Ready state, the printer automatically senses the position of the paper guides
each time a tray is opened and closed. A prompt displays on the control panel asking the
user to accept or modify the detected paper size and the assumed paper type. The paper
size is determined by the position of the paper guides. The paper type is the last type
selected by the user. If no paper type had been selected, the paper type is the default
type:plain.
On the printer control panel, touch the Accept button to accept the detected settings or
touch the Modify button to see lists of paper sizes and paper types to choose from. Select
the appropriate settings, and then touch OK to proceed.

Complete instructions are in the User Guide and the printer Support Page at www.hp.com.
Print overview
The printers use typical print drivers for both Windows and Mac OS. Windows users can
use either the discrete (printer specific) print driver or the UPD. The overall operation and
functionality of the discrete driver and the UPD are very similar.

Motors
The printer has eight motors. The motors drive the components in the paper-feed and
image-formation systems.
The DC controller monitors the fuser motor; the scanner motor, and drum motors 1, 2, and
3 to determine if a motor has failed. It notifies the formatter when it encounters the following
conditions:

 Startup failure: the motor does not reach a specified speed within a specified
time from when the motor starts.
 Rotational failure: the rotational speed of the motor is not in the specified
range for a specified time after the motor reaches a specified speed.

Defeating interlocks
Different tests can be used to isolate different types of issues. For assembly or noise
isolation, run the diagnostic test when the front door or right door is open. To operate
the printer with the doors open, the interlock switch levers must be depressed to
simulate a closed-cover position.
Warning
Be careful when performing printer diagnostics to avoid risk of injury. Only
trained service personnel should open and run the diagnostics with the covers
removed. Never touch any of the power supplies when the printer is turned on.
TIP:
Fold a stiff piece of paper, for example a business card or index card, into a 10
mm(.375 in) strip, and insert the strip into the slots for the front door and right
door logic switches.
1. Open the front door, and then insert a folded piece of paper into one slot.

5. Fuser wrapping jam detection overview

6. The printer includes controls for detecting when a jam occurs causing the paper to
wrap around the fuser roller.

7. Loop control
8. The loop control stabilizes the paper feed operation before the paper enters the
fuser. If the pressure roller rotates slower than the secondary transfer roller, the
paper loop increases and an image defect or paper crease occurs. If the pressure
roller rotates faster than the secondary transfer roller, the paper loop decreases
and a vertical scanning magnification failure occurs because the pressure roller
pulls the paper.
9. To prevent these problems, the loop sensor detects the paper loop before the
paper enters the fuser. The DC controller adjusts the rotational speed of the fuser
motor according to the output signals from the loop sensor and maintains the
paper loop. The DC controller slows the fuser motor when the sensor is off and
speeds up the sensor when the sensor is on.
10. Loop control mechanism

Pressure roller pressurization and depressurization control

To prevent excessive wear on the pressure roller and help with jam-clearing procedures,
the pressure roller pressurizes only during printing and standby. The DC controller reverses
the fuser motor. The fuser motor rotates the fuser pressure-release cam.

Pressure roller pressurization control

The pressure roller depressurizes under the following conditions:

 The printer is turned off

 Any failure occurs
 During power-save mode
 A paper jam is detected

If the DC controller does not sense the fuser pressure-release sensor for a specified period
after it reverses the fuser motor, it notifies the formatter that a fuser pressure-release
mechanism failure has occurred.

Sleep mode
NOTE:
In the General Settings menu (a submenu of the Administration menu), this
item is termed Sleep Timer Settings.
This feature conserves power after the printer has been idle for an adjustable period of
time. When the printer is in Sleep mode, the printer retains all settings, downloaded fonts,
and macros. The default setting is for Sleep mode to be enabled, and the printer enters
Sleep mode after 30 seconds of idle time.
The printer firmware uses a combination of timers and Sleep settings to control when the
printer enters a different state as well as what states the printer will enter. The available
states are listed below, in descending order, from using the most power to using the least
power:

 Active: The printer control panel is fully illuminated. The power button light is
illuminated.
 Shallow sleep: The printer control panel is dim and the content is grayed out,
but is still readable. The power button light is illuminated.
 Sleep: The printer control panel is off (blacked out). The power button light
blinks once every three seconds.
 Deep sleep: The printer control panel is off (blacked out). The power button
light blinks once every three seconds. The control panel and power button
appearance is the same in this state as the sleep state. However, the printer
is drawing less than 1 watt of power in the deep sleep state (as opposed to 6
watts of power in the sleep state).
 Off: This state is entered by pressing the power button or removing power
from the printer. The power button light is not illuminated.

The printer exits Sleep mode and enters the warm-up cycle when any of the following
events occur:

 The printer receives a print job, valid data, or a PML or PJL command.
 A control-panel button is pressed or the touchscreen is touched.
 A cover or door is opened.
 The engine-test switch is pressed.
 A paper tray, other than Tray 1, is opened.

NOTE:

If the printer is in the deep sleep state, opening a paper tray will not
cause the printer to exit Sleep mode.
NOTE:
Printer error messages override the Sleep message. The printer enters Sleep
mode at the appropriate time, but the error message continues to appear.
TIP:
When the printer is in Sleep mode, the sub-power supply is off and the low-
voltage power supply is on.

that of the printer base.

Trays 3-5 tray presence detection

The trays 3-5 tray presence detection for the paper feeder is the same way as that of the
printer base.

Trays 3-5 tray lift operation

The 550-sheet paper feeder keeps the paper stack surface at the correct pickup position.
The tray lift operation occurs under the following conditions:

 The printer is turned on.

 The tray is inserted.
 The paper stack surface of the tray lowers.

The sequence occurs as follows:

1. The feeder tray-lifting motor rotates and the lifter moves up.
2. When the paper-feeder media-stack-surface sensor detects the stack
surface of the paper, the lifting motor stops.
3. The lifting motor rotates again to lift the lifter when the paper-feeder media-
stack-surface sensor detects the stack surface, and then lowers during
printing.
If a tray media-stack-surface sensor does not detect a stack surface within a specified
period after the lifting motor starts rotating, the paper feeder driver determines that the
lifting motor has failed and notifies the formatter through the DC controller.
The paper-feeder driver notifies the formatter if either of the paper-feeder media-stack-
surface sensors fails to detect the stack surface within a specified period from when a lift-
up operation starts.

Trays 3-5 jam detection

The 550-sheet paper feeder uses the feed sensor (SR21) and right door switch (SW20) to
detect the presence of paper and to check whether paper has jammed.

Jam detection (1x550-sheet paper feeder)

The 550-sheet paper feeder detects the following jams:

 Media input delay jam 1 (550-sheet paper feeder): Paper did not reach the
registration sensor in time.
 Media input delay jam 2 (550-sheet paper feeder): Paper did not reach the
source tray feed sensor in time.
 Media input delay jam 3 (550-sheet paper feeder): Paper did not reach the
tray 3 feed sensor in time.
 Pickup stationary jam (550-sheet paper feeder): The feed sensor does not
detect the trailing edge of paper within a specified time after the sensor
detects the leading edge.
 Residual paper jam (550-sheet paper feeder): The feed sensor detects the
presence of paper for a specified time during an automatic delivery operation.
 Right door open jam (550-sheet paper feeder): The right door open is
detected during a paper feed operation.

Tools for troubleshooting: Print/stop test

Use this diagnostic test to isolate the cause of problems such as image-formation defects
and jams within the engine. During this test, stop the paper anywhere along the printer
paper path. The test can be programmed to stop printing internal pages or an external print
job when the paper reaches a certain position. The test can also be programmed to stop
from 0 to 60,000 ms. If the timer is set to a value that is greater than the job-print time, the
printer can recover in one of two ways.

 After the print job is completed press OK button to return to

the Troubleshooting menu before the timer times out.
 After the timer times out, touch the Stop button. Activate the door switch to
restart the engine and return it to a normal state.

NOTE:
Do not try to perform a print/stop test while the printer is calibrating, because
restarting the printer might be necessary. If a jam message displays on the

Yellow comparison page

Yellow cannot be easily seen unless combined with cyan, so half of each page is yellow
and the other half is an amplified version of yellow print problems (green half). Compare the
yellow on page one with the corresponding green on page two for defects. Also check the
cyan page for defects.

Black print-quality troubleshooting page

The grids are in inches and millimeters. They are labeled with letters
1. Grids and numbers so that defects can be described by position and by
distance between repeats.

After printing, the box with no extra color in each area on each page
2. Color plane shows how far off the CPR of that color is. Each page has two process
registration direction areas and three scan direction areas that are labeled x and y
(CPR) bars and 1–11. The page should be fed by the long edge. Each square from
the center equals 42 microns.

Student performance objectives

Service
Service
The focus of this module is to familiarize you with resources for replacing Field Replaceable
Units (FRU) using the HP Partner First Portal and the WISE database of videos.
See the Use and Maintain module of this course for directions for removing and replacing
CSR parts.
By the completion of this module, learners should be able to:

 Access WISE and perform a model search for repair and replace videos.
 Select the tools necessary for replacing FRUs.
 Understand any precautions or warnings appropriate to the repair and
replacement of FRUs.

General service warnings

CAUTION:
Under NO circumstances should a formatter from a different printer be installed
during the repair or troubleshooting processes. The formatter stores important
data specific to the model of printer it is installed in and is not designed to be
swapped or repurposed in any way. Return a used formatter to HP. Issues that
can occur from swapping a formatter include:
— Serial number, product number, product name, page count, and supported
cartridges information change and might make a product unusable.
– 33.02.01 Used board/Disk installed errors may occur.
If a used formatter is installed and causes this issue, the partner must cover the
costs of the repair in the form of a product replacement. There is no method in the
field to recover a printer where a used formatter is installed. For more information,
see the following topic (c06360930):
HP internal link: 33.02.01 error or printer name and/or product number changes
after replacing the formatter
HP external partner link: 33.02.01 error or printer name and/or product number
changes after replacing the formatter
(To access the HP partner link, you must first log in to the HP Partner First Portal
and then connect to WISE.)
Flat flexible cables

 Use caution when handling a flat flexible cable (FFC). FFCs can be damaged
easily during printer service and repair.
 FFC connectors are delicate. Be careful not to damage connectors when
removing and installing FFCs.
 Do not unnecessarily bend or pinch FFCs.
 Verify FFCs are properly seated during reinstallation. Sometimes it is difficult
to determine if a FFC is fully seated in a connector.

Before performing service

 Remove all media from the printer.

 Turn off the power using the on/off button.
 Unplug the power cable and all interface cables.
 Wait 30 seconds before removing any parts.
 If possible, place the printer on an ESD workstation or mat, or use an ESD
strap. If an ESD workstation, mat, or strap is not available, ground yourself by
touching the sheet-metal chassis before touching an ESD-sensitive part.
 Remove the print cartridge or cartridges.
 Remove the tray cassette or cassettes.

Ferrites and ferrite holders

Consult the Repair Manual when removing cables with ferrites. The ferrites and holders can
be damaged if removed or installed improperly. Some of the steps and tips are difficult to
show in a video.
Electrostatic discharge
Some parts are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Perform service work at an ESD-
protected workstation or mat. If an ESD workstation or mat is not available, ground yourself
by touching the sheet-metal chassis before touching an ESD-sensitive assembly. Look for
this symbol in the course videos and the printer Service Manual:

Required tools

 #2 Phillips screwdriver with a magnetic tip and a 152-mm((6-in)) shaft length

 Small, flat-blade screwdriver
 Needle-nose pliers
 ESD strap (if one is available)
