dwater = 1 g/mL
dethanol= 0.801 g/mL
Vwater= 1 g/mL x mwater
Vethanol= 0.801 g/mL x m ethanol
The number of moles of the water and the ethanol can be calculated as below equation. The
molar mass of the ethanol and water are 46.07 g/mol and 18.01 g/mol respectively.
m Ethanol( g) m water ( g)
nethanol= nwater=
46.07 g/mol 18.01 g/ mol
The mole fractions of water and ethanol is required to obtain partial molar volumw and can
be calculated as follows.
n ethanol n water
Xethanol= X water=
n ethanol+n water n ethanol+n water
The partial molar volumes of water and ethanol is calculated by the ratio of the change in
the volume and the number of moles of the added substance. The change in the volume can
be obtained by subtracting the volume of water or ethanol from the measured volume to get
volume of ethanol and water.
