As the experiment demonstrated, the open circuit and short circuit test are
very economical and suitable due to the fact that they can be performed
without actually loading the transformer. The Open Circuit test or No load test
is performed on the primary winding of the transformer where the wattmeter,
ammeter and the voltage are connected to their primary winding; while the
Short Circuit test or Impedance test is performed on the secondary winding of
the transformer where the measuring instruments (wattmeter, ammeter,
voltage meter) are connected to the high voltage winding of the transformer
while their primary winding is short circuited. That being the case, the open
circuit test are performed to determine the no load branch parameters with
simple calculations. Moreover, the short circuit test is used to determine the
branch parameters of the equivalent circuit such as equivalent resistance,
impedance, leakage resistance.
