Determination of Transformer equivalent circuit from Open

Circuit and Short Circuit Test

PRE TEST
PROCEDURE AND SIMULATION
STEP 1
Make the proper connection by clicking the node as instructed below.
If the wire is misplaced, click the node number to deattach the nodes' wire.

a) Connect +ve terminal of battery to +ve terminal of autotransformer and -

ve terminal of MCB to -ve terminal of autotransformer.

b) Connect -ve terminal of autotransformer to -ve terminal of voltmeter1

and P2 of transformer.
c) Connect +ve terminal of autotransformer to +ve terminal of voltmeter1
and +ve terminal of ammeter

d) Now connect P1 of transformer to L, P2 of transformer to V, S1 of

transformer to +ve terminal of voltmeter 2 and S2 of transformer to –ve
terminal of voltmeter 2.
e) Connect -ve terminal of ammeter to M terminal of wattmeter.

f) Connect C of wattmeter to L
STEP 2
Click on “Check Connection” button to check the correctness of the
connections.

 If connection is correct, an alert appears. Click ok. Now, go to step 4.

 If connection is wrong, an alert appears. Click ok. Now, go to step 3.

STEP 3
Check the connection and either deattach the incorrect wire connection or
Click on reset button and start from step 1.
STEP 4
Switch on the MCB.

STEP 5
Click anywhere on the autotransformer.
STEP 6
Click "Add to table" button to insert the values in the table.

STEP 7
Click "Print" button, to print the full connections with graph and table.

NO “PRINT” BUTTON, GRAPH AND TABLE FOUND

POST TEST
CONCLUSION

As the experiment demonstrated, the open circuit and short circuit test are
very economical and suitable due to the fact that they can be performed
without actually loading the transformer. The Open Circuit test or No load test
is performed on the primary winding of the transformer where the wattmeter,
ammeter and the voltage are connected to their primary winding; while the
Short Circuit test or Impedance test is performed on the secondary winding of
the transformer where the measuring instruments (wattmeter, ammeter,
voltage meter) are connected to the high voltage winding of the transformer
while their primary winding is short circuited. That being the case, the open
circuit test are performed to determine the no load branch parameters with
simple calculations. Moreover, the short circuit test is used to determine the
branch parameters of the equivalent circuit such as equivalent resistance,
impedance, leakage resistance.
