1. Define literature. Give the meaning of it.

Came from the latin word (litera, litteratura, or literratus) that


means ‘writing formed with letters’.
it is defined as any collection of written works

2. Give the divisions of literature.

The divisions of literature are prose and poetry

3. Explain each division of literature

PROSE

it is written in paragraph form and it is meant to reflect


common, everyday language.
Examples include novels, essays, letters, or biography
Divided into 2 sub-divisions which are Non-Fiction and
Fiction
Nonfiction is based on real life
Fiction is a work that was based on a writer’s
imagination.
POETRY
Poetry is a type of literature based on the interplay of words
and rhythm.
Examples include a ballad, epic, sonnet, or song.
Divided into 3 sub-divisions: Narrative, Lyric, and Dramatic
Narrative Poetry tells or narrates a story.
Lyric Poetry features poems intended to be sung with the
accompaniment of the musical instrument called “lyre” hence,
lyric poetry.
Dramatic Poetry features poems meant to be performed on
stage.

4-5. Enumerate or give different types if literature. Give an example of each


type of literature

Drama:
Drama is the specific mode of fiction represented in
performance: a play, opera, mime, ballet, etc., performed
a theatre, or on radio or television.
Examples: Romeo and Juliet

Fable
Uses animals as characters to convey the story.
They are a personification of human characteristics and
their nature.
Example: The Turtle And The Rabbit
Autobiography
The character himself is the writer and
describes his life from his own original
perspective and experiences.
Examples: Long Walk To Freedom by Nelson
Mandela

Biography

Biography in literature tells the story of a person


from another person’s perspective.
Examples:a book about the story of President
Obama's life

Science Fiction
Science fiction, also called “sci-fi,” is a genre of literature
where most of the things are imaginary. The stories are
about future technology.
Examples: Marvel movies

Essay

Contains the authors’ point of view about any


particular topic explained in detail
Examples: School essay

Fairy Tale
Story about fairies or other magical creatures, usually
for children.
Examples: Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs
Folklore
The songs, stories, myths, and proverbs of a people or
"folk" as handed down by word of mouth.
Examples: Robin Hood

Legend

Story, sometimes of a national or folk hero, which has a


basis in fact but also includes imaginative material.
Examples: Bloody Mary

Mythology

Legend or traditional narrative, often based in part on historical


events, that reveals human behavior and natural phenomena by
its symbolism; often pertaining to the actions of the gods.
Examples: Greek Mythology

Speech

Public address or discourse.
