Significance of a Research Proposal

An important part of many research projects, and a key element for anyone wishing to
secure funding for research is that of writing a research proposal. A research proposal is
defined as a carefully delineated statement of a research problem, an outline of the research
design and a clear indication of the significance of the proposed study (Schumacher and
McMillan, 1993:563). There are two types of research proposals: solicited and unsolicited
proposals. The former is submitted in response to a specific work statement from the sponsor.
The latter solicit proposals for training projects, research, or specific services. The advantages
of a research proposal depend directly on the types of research proposals.

Soliciting a number of proposals from different researchers may result in a number of

benefits. First, it may lead to choosing the most knowledgeable researcher. Second, it ensures
that the chosen proposal has the best chance of succeeding. Third, a good research proposal
demonstrates the sincerity of the researcher. Fourth, these solicited proposals help sponsors
save money. To sum up, it is clear that solicited proposals are significant and important in
conducting successful researches.
For unsolicited proposals, the same benefits of solicited proposals are obtained, but the
applicants are additionally supported during the research process. First, the effectiveness of
the whole plan for a study will be reviewed. Second, the process of reviewing a research
proposal will identify flaws and errors. Third, a good research proposal will help in the
estimation of cost and time. All in all, unsolicited proposals are beneficial.
