Motivation statement

State briefly (max 3000 characters) your reasons for applying for the NOHA+ Master’s Programme in
International Humanitarian Action. *

Building my career as a professional humanitarian worker is the best decision I have ever made. I grew
up in minority as a Chinese born Indonesia who were not able to choose any schools or environment I
wanted to be in because of a traumatic experience that my parents suffered from during an incident in
1998. I have always wanted an advanced higher education and inevitably one day being able to make my
own decision; where to study, what career I want to pursue. Thus, I choose to become a lawyer,
specifically, in the field of International Law of Human Rights therefore, I have the ability to use my voice
to speak up and protect my family against discrimination. However, as I continued studying deeper, and
got involved in humanitarian assistance with Justice Peace & Integrated Creation by the Semarang
Great Bishop, I found that my passion is in helping those who do not have access or ability to gain justice
independently . Moreover, in my thesis I chose to write about Syi’ah a refugee who was chased and
intimidated. I also continued to work voluntarily as a teacher for the children in remote area of Central
Java and recently founded a youth forum from the Eastern part of Indonesia that can be located at the
following: un-reached of the development Instagram @Tapele_id.

Nevertheless, On my 4th year of working in humanitarian sector I realize that I have the opportunity and
the talent to do more in helping people by strengthening my organization because most of my role
currently is in fundraising. I had the opportunity to learn the complexity of poverty and the strategy to
overcome it with the passion to grow, plus transform with the community that we are assisting. My
worries are always focused on “what if I am not able to bring enough funding for our projects, and what
if the funding is not sustainable to bring resilience”. Consequently, there is a gap in my
previousacademics, coupled with my work experiences that led me to consider studying a masters , to
gain a deeper perspective by combining the work that I have previously done with my organization. the
trend within humanitarian assistance globally is moving to and how can I put it together to a sustainable
strategy for my organization.

Furthermore, I want to have the capacity to be able to educate the donors, private sectors to have the
same urgency in humanitarian intervention. Especially in Indonesia, that majority of the company CSR is
caritative for a GOOD IMAGE instead of community empowerment. In personal level of earning the
opportunity to study master will set an example to the younger generation in my community, in rural
Luwuk Banggai, Central Sulawesi. A hope of building a stronger community through higher education
and it is possible to create access to every of our dream. The struggled of studying triple hard that I
faced during my high school transition from rural to urban, East Java, should not be repeated.
