Question 1 of 5

1. Immediately the boys exclaimed together, "You get the best

job of all!" "You get to make our snowman's face," they said.
Then I realized that it was my duty to make our new friend come
alive. I used chestnuts for his two eyes, a carrot for his nose, and
red licorice for his riby red lips. We agreed that was the best part
of our snow day.

2. After breakfast it was like a madhouse! We were all scrambling

for our mittens, boots, scarves, and coats. Then out the door we
flew. It was a race to see who would get the first snowball made
for the base of our snowman. We knew it had to be big. Micah,
my brother, had quickly rolled a huge snowball. We knew the job
wasn't over yet, though.

3. My brothers and I woke up late one Saturday morning to a

beautiful winter wonderland. As we sat eating our pancakes, we
planned fun adventures we would embark upon. As the snow fell
ever so gently, our anticipation grew. We couldn't wolf down our
breakfast quickly enough. We finally decided on our first project.
We would build a snowman.

4. Next, Rance and I were racing to see who would have the mid-
sized snowball for our snowman's middle section. In minutes, he
had the belly of the snowman made and I was left holding the
head. Disappointed, I placed the smallest snowball on top to
complete the snowman's body.

Question 4 of 5
The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge spans the opening between the Pacific
Ocean and the San Francisco Bay. It is a great feat of
engineering. At the time it was finished, it was the world's longest
suspension bridge. Even today, it is still the second-longest
bridge of its kind.

For years, the only way to get across the bay's mouth was by
ferry. In 1921, engineer Joseph Strauss, who had built many
smaller bridges, proposed an idea for a new bridge. It would span
the bay's mouth and make travel easier. It would have long,
straight sections sticking out from each end, with supporting
towers in the center. The design was complicated. However,
Strauss and his team worked hard to get the idea off the ground.
Though it took several years, their design was eventually
approved.

Finally, in 1933, construction on the Golden Gate Bridge began.

It would take more than four years. The job was dangerous, and
11 workmen were killed during construction of the bridge.
However, the number of deaths was lower than expected. This
was due to a new safety feature: large nets hung beneath the
construction areas. If a worker fell, he would be caught in a net
instead of dropping hundreds of feet into choppy, cold water. The
nets saved the lives of 19 men.

The bridge was finished in April 1937. It opened for traffic the
