PAST TENSE SIMPLE

FORMS:
AFF. S+V2
NEG. S+DID NOT(DIDN’T)+V1
Int. DID+S+V1?
Pronunciation and spelling rules of -ED:
Ed is pronounced:
-(d) when the verbs end in a vowel+stressed consonant
(b,g,l,m,n,v,z,dz, ):played, arrived..
-(t) when the verbs end in an unstressed consonant (f,k,p,sh, tch):
liked,crossed
-(id) when the verbs end in -T or -d: wanted, nodded..
Spelling:
-when the verb end in short stressed vowel +a consonant, the final consonant
is doubled: stop-stopped, preferred…
-verbs ending in -Y preceded by a consonant, turn -Y in -I and add -ED: cry-
cried, study-studied;
-verbs ending in -e add only -D: move-moved…
-verbs ending in -IC or -c , change this suffix into -CK and add -ED: picnic-
picnicked, panic-panicked..
USAGES:
1. An action which took place in the past and finished in the past. The tiem
the action happened is expressed through adverbs and phrases suc as>
two hours ago, yesterday, in 1992, last night. About this moment we can
use questions like: when?, what time?, how long ago?
I went to the opera last night.
Wen/What time/How long ago did you call on him? I called on him
yesterday/at five o clock/a few days ago.
We can use past simple to express an action happened in a moment in
the past which is not mentioned but can be guessed from the context.
Instead, we can mention the place of the action…EG. I met him ouside
the museum.
The action happened and finished in a past moment which is mentioned
as a result of question and an answer in the Present Perfect:
Have you seen this film? / Yes, I have. I saw it last week.
2. A repeated action in the past (care se traduce de obicei prin imperfect in
limba romana). Eg. I often visited him.
Obs. A repeated action in the past may be expressed with the modal
verb WOULD (as a past habit)+infinitive: He would sit for hours in
front of his house , looking at the stars. (Statea/obisnuia sa stea…._).
In informal language , USED TO+INFINITIVE is used: He used to sit
in front of his house….
3.Past simple is used with other tense/temporal values:
-as a past perfect(mai mult ca perfectul) to refer to actions which happened
one after another in the past , especially in time clauses introduced by when,
after… Eg. He went out to play after he finished his homework.
-with a present meaning to express a polite request with verbs such as>
wish, want, wonder, like, intend. EG. I wondered if you could lend me th-is
book. (Ma interbam daca ati putea sa-mi imprumutati cartea)
-with a present meaning in indirect speech . Eg. He told me he was ill.
- with a future meaning in time clauses if the verb in the main clause is in
the past form. Eg. He told me he would show me the photos when he came.
(Mi-a spus ca-mi va arata fotografiile cand va veni).

PAST CONTINUOUS
FORMS:
AFF. S+WAS/WERE+V-ING
NEG. S+WASN’T/WEREN’T+V-ING
Int. WAS/WERE+S+V-ING?
USAGES:
1. An action which was continuous in past moment which is mentioned in
the moment of speaking .Eg. I was walking at 2 o’clock yesterday / at
this time last week.
2. An action which was continuous in a moment of the past which was
interrupted by a simple action. EG. He was writing when his sister came
in.
3. Two actions which were continuous at the same time in the past.
EG. When I was washing the dishes, he was cleaning his room.
4. To express an annoying habit in the past with adverbs such as:
ALWAYS, FOREVER, CONTINUALLY, ALL THE TIME. He was
always coming late to the English class.
5. With verbs that express a state, a past action which is temporary:
EG. He was living in Brasov when I met him.
6. In indirect speech for present simple: He said they were having visitor.
