DISS - Module 2 - The Social Science Disciplines Part I
DISS - Module 2 - The Social Science Disciplines Part I
II. Objectives:
After accomplishing this module, you must be able to:
1. identify the different disciplines in the social sciences;
2. distinguish uniqueness among the disciplines based on the field, main area of
inquiry and method; and
3. enhance ability to chronologically arrange important events to further develop
understanding.
III. Material/s:
You may visit our LMS for the powerpoint presentation/s.
V. Concept:
Have you ever wondered who the very first person to ever live in the earth was?
Of course, our Catholic belief will tell us – Adam and Eve. But still, our curiosity will want
to know how these “first persons” lived. Do they have a job? Where exactly in this world
did they first settle and stay?
Defining academic disciplines can prove to be a difficult activity since all of them
would have multiple definitions and explanations. More detailed aspects are left to
specialists but paying more attention to key terms in each discipline.
In this module, you will appreciate the value of different social science disciplines
as a potent tool of both understanding and transforming human condition in this world.
VI. Activity: Buhay SocSci!
Activity 1 : The WHOs and WHATs
Discussion
Anthropology comes from the Greek word anthrōpos (human) and Latin word logia
(study). It deals with the study of the nature of human beings, both from a biological and
cultural point of view. Paying closer attention to the photographs from activity no. 1,
Anthropologists are interested in tracing the physical changes that occurred in the
human biological make up across periods of time. From being able to stand and walk
straight; use hands to create useful tools from the things that can be found in the
surroundings; up to developing the faculties of human mind to come up with wise
decisions on how to survive everyday living.
There are four particular branches of study, formally established by Franz Boas
– the Father of Anthropology (but in this module, we will only discuss the 2 main
branches). If you are interested with the biological evolution of the human race, then
you might want to look further into Physical Anthropology. Another branch is called
Cultural Anthropology which focuses in the study of human cultural evolution.
Discussion
This activity is designed to test your knowledge about the physical make up of
the world. It is also an opportunity for you to be acquainted with the world of Social
Scientists in the field of Geography.
Below are set of words considered as Gibberish. Your task is to make sense of the
hidden meaning behind the confusing words by supplying the missing letters to
complete the thought.
Discussion
Geography comes from the Greek words geo (world) and graphia (writing). The word
was first used by the Father of Geography- Eratosthenes. It is a discipline that deals
with the understanding of location, regions, movement of people and human
relationship with its environment. On its surface, it focuses on the natural processes of
the Earth like climate, landforms, water forms and physical territories. This branch of
geography is called Physical Geography. Another branch of study that geographers
can focus on is Human Geography. Here, the interest is in knowing how humans
adapt to the changes of their surroundings and how they depend on it, vice- versa.
In the end, geographers believe that proximity to a certain geographic location
determines the kind of society that will be formed or created over a period of time.
VII. Evaluation
Compare and contrast the Social Science Disciplines by completing the matrix. Use the
group of words inside the box to supply the missing information.
Anthropos Macro Oikonomia Physical Allocation of scarce
resources
Culture Micro Geo and Physical and Human relationship to its
Graphia Human environment
Choose one among the three social science disciplines presented in this module
and explain the cartoon below using the perspective of your chosen discipline.
