DISCIPLINES AND IDEAS IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES

HumSS Specialized Subject

Class No.: _____ Date: _________________________

Name: ____________________________________ Module 2 – 1st Quarter – SY2021-2022
Grade and Section: __________________________ Teacher: ______________________

I. Title: The Social Science Disciplines (Part I)

II. Objectives:
After accomplishing this module, you must be able to:
1. identify the different disciplines in the social sciences;
2. distinguish uniqueness among the disciplines based on the field, main area of
inquiry and method; and
3. enhance ability to chronologically arrange important events to further develop
understanding.

III. Material/s:
You may visit our LMS for the powerpoint presentation/s.

IV. Time Frame:

Week 1 – Day 2 and 3

V. Concept:
Have you ever wondered who the very first person to ever live in the earth was?
Of course, our Catholic belief will tell us – Adam and Eve. But still, our curiosity will want
to know how these “first persons” lived. Do they have a job? Where exactly in this world
did they first settle and stay?
Defining academic disciplines can prove to be a difficult activity since all of them
would have multiple definitions and explanations. More detailed aspects are left to
specialists but paying more attention to key terms in each discipline.
In this module, you will appreciate the value of different social science disciplines
as a potent tool of both understanding and transforming human condition in this world.
VI. Activity: Buhay SocSci!
Activity 1 : The WHOs and WHATs

This activity is designed to review your basic knowledge of Human Evolution. It is

also an opportunity for you to be acquainted with the world of Social Scientists in the
field of Anthropology.
Below are photographs showing the different stages of human evolution and
development. Based on your observation, arrange the given pictures chronologically.

Topic no. 1: Anthropology

Discussion
Anthropology comes from the Greek word anthrōpos (human) and Latin word logia
(study). It deals with the study of the nature of human beings, both from a biological and
cultural point of view. Paying closer attention to the photographs from activity no. 1,
Anthropologists are interested in tracing the physical changes that occurred in the
human biological make up across periods of time. From being able to stand and walk
straight; use hands to create useful tools from the things that can be found in the
surroundings; up to developing the faculties of human mind to come up with wise
decisions on how to survive everyday living.
There are four particular branches of study, formally established by Franz Boas
– the Father of Anthropology (but in this module, we will only discuss the 2 main
branches). If you are interested with the biological evolution of the human race, then
you might want to look further into Physical Anthropology. Another branch is called
Cultural Anthropology which focuses in the study of human cultural evolution.

Activity no. 2: The Top 10 Things I can’t live without ☺

This activity is designed to raise mindfulness with your everyday basic

consumptions. Knowing the difference between what you want and what you actually
need. It is also an opportunity for you to be acquainted with the world of Social
Scientists in the field of Economics.
In a separate paper, list down 10 things you can’t live without on a daily basis. After
doing this, categorize the things you wrote in the matrix below.
NEEDS WANTS
(things you can’t live without) (things you want for extra happiness and
indulgence)

Topic no. 2: Economics

Discussion

Economics comes from the Greek word oikonomia (household management). It is a

discipline that deals with the study of optimum allocation of scarce resources to satisfy
the unlimited human wants and needs. There are two branches of economics –
Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Take a look at your top 10 list of human wants
and needs. Look for things that concern personal human consumptions. Examples
may include the basic things you buy on a daily basis like food and drinking water.
Microeconomics is interested on the individual consumption of goods, be it a “want”
or a “need”- and the factors like budget and product price that influence one’ s buying
activities. On the other hand, Macroeconomics focuses on the aggregate or over- all
buying and selling activities of the country. As explained further by the Father of

“… Social science is interested in telling us what it means to be human.”

Modern Economics – Adam Smith, it is the consumer and producer activities that
contribute to the development of the country’s economy.
It is critical to study Economics for nation building, economic stability and
financial growth of a country as it assesses if the policies are favorable for
development.

Activity no. 3: #Gibberish

This activity is designed to test your knowledge about the physical make up of
the world. It is also an opportunity for you to be acquainted with the world of Social
Scientists in the field of Geography.
Below are set of words considered as Gibberish. Your task is to make sense of the
hidden meaning behind the confusing words by supplying the missing letters to
complete the thought.

1. Mouth Eve Rey East 1. M _ _ _ _ / _V____T

2. Saw Hour Add East Earth 2. S A _ _ _ A / _ E S _ _ _

4. Bear Mode At Try Angle 4. _ E _ M _ _ _ / T _ _ A _ _ _ _

Topic no. 3: Geography

Discussion

Geography comes from the Greek words geo (world) and graphia (writing). The word
was first used by the Father of Geography- Eratosthenes. It is a discipline that deals
with the understanding of location, regions, movement of people and human
relationship with its environment. On its surface, it focuses on the natural processes of
the Earth like climate, landforms, water forms and physical territories. This branch of
geography is called Physical Geography. Another branch of study that geographers
can focus on is Human Geography. Here, the interest is in knowing how humans
adapt to the changes of their surroundings and how they depend on it, vice- versa.
In the end, geographers believe that proximity to a certain geographic location
determines the kind of society that will be formed or created over a period of time.

VII. Evaluation
