“Effects of the Distance Learning to the Academic Performance of the Students of

Busao National High School”

Introduction
Three years ago, the unprecedented global pandemic has disrupted every field of
the society be it the government, the economy, the different institutions and
establishments— medical institutions, government offices, market, supermarket, malls,
different modes of transportations and especially the academic institutions. As a result,
COVID-19 restrictions and countermeasures were implemented which affected the
traditional way of schooling, wherein face-to-face interactions among students was
prohibited. Despite the hindrances that the global pandemic has brought, the
Department of Education still want to continue the academic year and in order to
continue the educational process, different modes of learning, different approaches
were imposed such as online learning platforms and distance learning.
Distance learning was mainly implemented all over the country especially under
the Department of Education for elementary and secondary learners. Distance modular
learning was the most possible way to continue learning amidst COVID-19 Pandemic.
Several studies show that in distance learning, there are cases where both the
learners and the teachers encountered challenges and difficulties in accessing
electronic devices such as android and smart phones, tablets, personal computers and
laptops, as well as the internet connection, the learning environment for some students
were also not favorable, some students did not have a quiet place to study, especially
the unfortunate families. Some problems with distance learning arise from the technical
and pedagogical skills of the teachers which were needed to be integrated with the
digital devices for the instruction of the distance learning and also in offering
psychological and communication or connection with the students to continue the
teaching and learning process ( Panagouli, Stavridou, Savvidi, Kourti, Psaltopolou,
Sergantanis and Tsitsika, 2021).
Although distance modular learning is an ideal approach and learning modality to
continue the academic process amid global pandemic, it’s efficiency and effects to the
academic performance of the students of Busao National High School is yet to be
known.

Rationale
We have adapted to drastic changes just to cope up with the ill-effects this
pandemic has brought. Law-makers as well as administrators from the field of the
academe have exhausted all their efforts to continue the academic year despite the
hindrances and adversities of continuing the classes amidst global pandemic. Schools
have adapted to various learning delivery modalities such as blended learning,
traditional face-to-face learning, home schooling and the most common modality—
distant learning(modular distance and online distance learning).
Distant Learning refers to a teaching delivery modality where learning takes
place between the teacher and the learners who are geographically remote from each
other during instruction which can either be modular distance learning or online distance
learning. While we are concern for the health and safety of the students, restricting face
to face interaction to avoid contact from each other to be safe from the virus, have we
thought that we are compromising the quality of education they are supposed to
undergo? Have we thought of the less fortunate students, those who are slow learners
and those students with special needs? We are ought to commit with the principle that
no students should be left behind, but with this distant learning, are we certain that all of
the students are able to grasp the information and skills they should possess after
undergoing the curriculum?
While we are adhering to the safety measures our government has implemented,
we must also think of the quality education our students must experience. We should
ensure that learning still happens with whatever learning modality we should apply.
While making sure that our students are safe, we should also work on the kind of
education we are giving to them. No students should be sick, no students should be left
behind, and no students should be compromised with a good quality education. With
that being said, this study seeks to explore the effects of the distance learning to the
academic performance of the students of Busao National High School.

Statement of the Problem

The main thrust of this study is to determine the effects of the distance learning
to the academic performance of the students of Busao National High School.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the students in terms of:
1.1. gender
1.2. age
1.3. grade level
1.4. family income
1.5. gadgets used for distance learning;
2. What are the average grades of the students during face-to-face learning in
terms of:
2.1. Mathematics
2.2. English
2.3. Science
2.4. Filipino
2.5. MAPEH
2.6. Araling Panlipunan
2.7. Technology and Livelihood Education
2.8. Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao
3. What are the average grades of the students during distance learning in terms of:
3.1. Mathematics
3.2. English
3.3. Science
3.4. Filipino
3.5. MAPEH
3.6. Araling Panlipunan
3.7. Technology and Livelihood Education
3.8. Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao?
4. Is there a significant difference between the profile of the students and their
average grades during face-to-face learning?
5. Is there a significant difference between the profile of the students and their
average grades during distance learning?
6. Is there a significant difference between the grades of the students on face-to-
face learning and distance learning?

Objectives of the Study

This study aim to achieve the following objectives:
1. Provide information as to the difference of the academic performance of the
students during face-to-face learning and distance learning.
2. Discover problems that arise on distance learning that affect the students'
academic performance.
3. Provide possible solutions to the problems that arise on distance learning.
4. Provide solutions and policy implications that will improve the students’ academic
on distance learning.
