A Reaction Paper on “MOSFET Operation, Working and Application”

Last July 16, 2021, the Electronics and Communications Engineering Department
spearheaded a technical webinar entitled “Industrial Applications of MOSFETS”. The speaker of
the webinar was Engr. Andrew Salido. He briefly but comprehensively discussed everything
about MOSFETs and entertained our questions by enlightening our minds about some matters
about the topic which are not clear to us. I find the topic relevant in Electrical Engineering
because we also use electronic devices in making some of the electrical devices and equipments.
At the end of the webinar, I have gained important insights and information which are significant
in the field of engineering that I can use in the future as an aspiring electrical engineer.

The history of MOSFETs and its applications were discussed in the earlier part of the
webinar. From that, I learned that they are very useful in almost all electronic and electrical
devices we can find both at home and in the industry. Moreover, I have learned as well that
MOSFETs are widely used both in digital and analog circuits and is then referred as the
backbone of modern electronics since it plays a significant role in the field concerned. The
speaker also discussed about the importance of semiconductor testing and the different testing
methods being used. He also tackled about the different testing equipments and the parameters to
consider before and during testing. Engr. Salido also shared his experiences as a test engineer
wherein he enlightened our minds about the facts about being a test engineer as such. After his
discussion on the said topic, he entertained our questions regarding those matters which were not
included in the discussions as well as the points which we had difficulties in understanding.
Some participants asked about the operation of test equipments and some asked about the
semiconductors being tested. I also asked a question anonymously as to how MOSFETs are
named according to or is there any naming convention being followed. I was glad that my
question was entertained by him because way back in my earlier years in college, none of my
professors informed us on how these semiconductors are named. Nevertheless, the technical
webinar broadened my understanding about MOSFETs.

Honestly speaking, I have no idea on how to use those equipments he showed and
haven’t seen any of those yet. With that, I have realized one thing – I will never learn anything
about operation of equipments with this type of on the-job training. However, I am sure that
whatever I learn from these technical webinars will be useful as I go on with my engineering
journey. I admit that I am not a skillful student but I can assure that I am teachable. So even if I
am just a product of online OJT, I can still keep up with those who are ahead of me whenever I
master my skills as soon as I start to explore industrial works. All in all, I find the webinar very
interesting and informative and that it brought additional knowledge to all participants who wish
to learn how important those semiconductor materials are.
