First Editions
If a book is a ‘first edition’ then it’s one of the first printed copies of the book. The value
of a first edition can vary a lot, depending on the book’s condition, the number of copies
printed, whether or not the author signed the book, and if there’s anything special about
the first edition to increase its value, such as a printing error.
When Bonhams in London auctioned a copy of J R R Tolkien’s The Hobbit in 2008,
experts expected it to sell for £30,000. Everyone was surprised when an anonymous
bidder bought the book for £60,000.
Only 1,500 copies of the 1937 first edition were printed. The book was an instant
success and has sold over 100,000,000 copies. Tolkien originally wrote The Hobbit for his
children but a friend of his, Elaine Griffiths, persuaded him to find a publisher. The first
edition on sale at Bonhams included a handwritten dedication from Tolkien to Elaine.
The auction also included the first foreign language edition of The Hobbit, translated into
Swedish in 1947. The book, which also included a dedication to Elaine Griffiths, sold for
£1,560. Since 1947 The Hobbit has been translated
