Escaping Criticism by Pere Borrell del Caso

Description

The art present a boy clothed with a dirty peasant white clothes. It is slighty open on his neck and the
shirt was tucked into his brown trousers. His bone on the neck is showing. The boy appears to be
escaping with his both hands holding on the frame. His right foot is about to step out into it and he
doesn't have slippers. He has this wide eye look of surprised or shocked which will instantly capture the
viewers.

The artist painted it with mostly white and yellow colors. Most of these is found on the boys' clothes and
on the frame. His body color is slightly brown and his hair and trouser are dark brown. The frame
background is black. From the left arm and right leg up to his right-pointing face, the composition of the
piece forms a triangle. The viewer's focus is once more directed to the face by this. The young peasant
boy's starving physique and unsettling face are drawn even more attention by the light's strong leftward
glare.

Analysis

The painting shows a contrast of light and dark colors. The black background help to put more emphasis
on the boy.The artist shows texture in the clothes and the frame. There seem to have a movement
because of the position of the boy.It creates an illusion making us believe that the boy is really escaping
the frame.Notice on the leftside of the frame the foreshadowing of the boy's face which is illuminated
by the light. The light values of the boy's clothes make it stand out on the black background frame. It is a
3D image trying to trick the viewers. The harmony of colors creates that pleasing appeal to the picture. It
is not overly colored which is great to balance the mood.
Interpretation

It is simply the artist's placement of the boy's hands, feet, and head outside the painted canvas area and
continuation of the depiction on the surrounding frame that gives the impression that the boy is
climbing out of the painting. The portrayal of the scruffy-dressed, bare-footed boy with his disheveled
hair and terrified expression desperately trying to escape out of the picture is so realistic, and the effect
is further enhanced by the illusion technique. We could deduce that this youngster, who appears to be
clothed like a boy from a poor family in a romantic painting, is attempting to escape the two-
dimensional world of the romantics and reach the realm of reality with an additional dimension of truth.

Judgement

The artist is succesful in creating this illusion. His intention is to grab our attention whenever we look into
it and emphatize with the poor young boy in the future. The object in the painting is easily identified
because of the technique the artist used.Gradations in value gave the appearance that three-
dimensional forms were actually present in three-dimensional space. This despite not being totally
lifelike, made the scenario appear incredibly alive.By looking at the painting,we might feel the same
way, having that urge to escape something. There are certain things which we tried to avoid thus making
us run away never facing it.All in all I think the painting is great in making us feel emotions and relates to
it.
