Ecology- is the study of interactions of living things and their environments.

Ecosystem – is an area where living things and non-living things interact with each other.

The two (2) main components of the ecosystem are the biotic components (living things) and the abiotic
components (non-living things)
A niche is the role a species plays in the ecosystem while a habitat is the physical area where a species
lives.

Abiotic factors are very important for the living organisms. They influence the living organisms to a
large extent. Organisms have to adapt and survive in accordance to the abiotic factors they interact with.
Examples of abiotic components of an ecosystem are water, soil, sunlight, air, and temperature.

The biotic components include both plants and animals and micro-organisms. The living components of
the ecosystem can further be classified into three (3) categories on the basis of their food habits or mode
of nutrition. These are the producers (autotrophs), consumers (heterotrophs) and decomposers.

1 Consumers are classified as:

a) Primary consumers. The first order consumers are called primary consumers. These animals are also
called herbivores.
b) Secondary consumers. They depend directly on primary consumers. (carnivore)
c) Tertiary consumers. These are the animals that obtain their nutrition by eating the secondary
consumers.

Usually, tertiary consumers are carnivore predators, although they may be also omnivores, which are
animals that feed on both meat and plant material.

A population is a group of organisms of the same kind living in the same place at the same time while a
community is a group of different populations that interact with each other in an environment.

Interactions in the ecosystem include mutualism, commensalism, parasitism, predation and competition.

Ecosystems have a complex set of interactions that happen between the biotic and abiotic components.
The components of an ecosystem are linked to each other through the energy flows and nutrient cycles.
Even though ecosystems do not have clear boundaries, these interactions get affected, even if one factor is
changed or removed. This ultimately has the capacity to affect the entire environment.
