WALK-AROUND
The extremely compact upper-structure of the
245XR gives the impression that its
undercarriage is noticeably longer than on the
conventional 220X model, but this is an optical
illusion, as both measure 4.46m long. The
undercarriage design is the tried and tested
X-Frame type, with belly guarding and sloped
side members for ease of cleaning.
Each frame features two top carrier rollers
with dirt relief holes situated beneath them,
in theory allowing the dirt to drop through.
The track motors are well-proven units from
Bonfiglioli.
The compact but taller upper-structure
requires a series of five steep steps to reach the
engine bay level from the offside front corner.
However, safe and good access is helped by
well-positioned handrails and convenient grab
handles.
The AdBlue fill point is nicely designed,
located just to the right of the second step, with
plenty of space for those that refill from drums.
The fill point incorporates a drip tray around the
cap, preventing any spills of the blue stuff
damaging the paintwork.
The diesel filler cap is located some distance
away, on the top level of the upper-structure,
so no excuses for filling up the wrong tank with
the wrong fluid.
Back down at ground level, the large panel
door to the side of the steps opens to reveal the
main Japanese Kayaba valve block, and all the
various components are easily accessible for
any routine maintenance. The inside of this
panel door hosts the diesel refuelling hose,
with pump controls easily to hand. With no
toolbox provided on this compact radius
excavator, the front of this compartment will
just about take a grease gun and a handful of

Due to the considerable amount of rock
excavation involved on this project, together
with a lack of knowledge on its behaviour
when placed in embankments, a trial
cut-and-fill operation was conducted on
the chosen route. In the latter half of 1964,
contractor G. Wimpey was employed on
a £150k project to construct two sections of
full-size motorway embankment, with varying
side slopes and employing different methods
of excavation and compaction.
For excavation, both blasting and ripping
methods were tested. Blasting involved opening
up a 25ft-high rock face and experimenting with
various hole sizes, hole spacing, hole angle,
amounts and types of explosive. For ripping,
Wimpey employed two Cat D9G dozers, one
fitted with a standard parallelogram ripper and
the other with a Kelly pivoting ripper. Both types
were tested with different shank lengths and
ripper points, and different ripping patterns
were tried. The results indicated no significant
differences in the production rates of the various
ripper options.
Several types of compactors were tested
on the fill, ranging from a 52-ton Albaret
pneumatic tyred roller to a Stothert & Pitt
3.75t vibrating roller. Surprisingly, results
from both these compactor types were similar,
despite their disparity in weight. However,
greater compaction was achieved when an

The announcement from Diecast
Masters of the availability of a
1:50-scale Cat 794AC was a pleasant
surprise. The model displays a good
level of detail and is far more refined
than previous haul truck releases from
this model maker.
Even better news is that a 1:50 replica
of an even larger Cat 798AC haul truck
is in the pipeline, produced from all-new
tooling, which is scheduled for release
towards the end of the year.
nderneath the model, its rugged chassis has been enhanced with various cables and
U pipes for added realism, and the front axle has a good range of steering movement,
operated by a pair of modelled hydraulic cylinders that offer a firm resistance.
All the wheels are freely rotating and the tyres have an authentic tread pattern plus a slight satin
finish, which looks better than the usual high shine tyres typically used. The rear axle has sprung
suspension, which works well considering the impressive 3kg weight of the model,
demonstrating the extensive use of zinc material and sparing use of plastic.
There is a very good paint match between plastic and metal parts, which allows for the extra
details that really make the model stand out.
