D/111 BRIDGE CONTROL MANOEUVRING CONSOLE INSTRUCTIONS

M.V AM GHENT 23-Jul-2019 Rev 0 Page 1 of 2

Action: Post

Note
Post this near Bridge Manoeuvring Console.
All deck officers must know the below instructions.
Chief Engineer to carry out the training for Deck Officers explaining the ship-specific procedures.

1. Engine Order Telegraph

Used for controlling the engine movements. There are 3 telegraphs on this vessel.
1. When on “Bridge Control” mode, use the bridge telegraph to remotely control the
engines, i.e. the engines can be put on STOP / AHEAD / ASTERN as required. For
adjusting the desired RPM, use the rotary knob to select “Fine Tuning” tab in the
home screen. The Fine tune should be enabled by pressing the rotary knob and
desired RPM to be selected by turning the knob and then pressing to set the
selected RPM.
2. When on “Engine Control Room” mode, use the bridge telegraph as a basic
telegraph to communicate to engine room for the desired engine movement.
Movement of bridge telegraph will be acknowledged by manually setting the engine
control room telegraph lever to the requested movement.
3. The third telegraph is located on the emergency manoeuvring or local manoeuvring
station of the main engine.

2. Indicator Switches - FWE, Stand By, At Sea

Use these button switches to give” Finish With Engine / Standby Engine / Revolutions Full
Away.”
When pressed from Bridge or ECR, they activate buzzer and flickering lights. When
acknowledged, it changes to steady light and buzzer stops.
 M/E starting air intermediate valve remains open only in SBE mode.
 The intermediate air valve opens automatically when moving the telegraph on
Bridge control mode.

3. Transfer of Engine Controls (ECR ~ Bridge)

Used for transferring engine control from ECR to Bridge.
When pressed from ECR, it activates buzzer and flickering lights. When acknowledged, it
changes to steady light and buzzer stops. Now use Bridge telegraph to control the engine
movements.
On FWE, engineers will take engine controls to ECR using this switch and upon
acknowledgement from Bridge.

Important:
In case it is required to change over the control to Bridge from ECR, while the engine is
running, the telegraph lever and governor speed setting should match with the Engine
Room prior changing over. This can be seen on the telegraph and the speed setting air
pressure gauge in ECR.

4. M/E Load Program

 At the time of Full Away, depress “At Sea”, which is to be acknowledged by
ECR.
 Move telegraph lever from FULL AHEAD to N. FULL.
 The Load Program indicator will light up and the engine speed will gradually
increase from Full Ahead to Navigation Full (or to the specified RPM selected
from bridge ACP) in a specified time interval and not instantly. The “ Load
program” will be displayed on the home screen (below the RPM scale
indication) and the display goes off once the set speed is reached.
 The RPM setting is limited by the max speed setting limiter from the ECR.
 The reduction of speed is done from the W / H using the rotary knob on the
telegraph.

5. M/E Load Program Bypass Switch

In an emergency, if an immediate Navigation Full Speed is required, the Load Program can
be cancelled. In this case the Load Program display goes off and RPM jumps to the set
value. Cancelling Load program can be done by accessing the corresponding screens using
the rotary knob as per below sequence
On the home screen, select “Limiters”, and then enable “Load Program” window and
select “Cancel Load Program”.

6. Emergency Override Switch

In an emergency (e.g. avoiding collision, grounding, etc.) these override switches can be
used, in following situations:
 Cancel SLD- To Cancel Automatic slowdown of M/E.
 Cancel SHD- To Cancel Automatic shutdown of M/E due to jacket cooling
water high temperature and piston cooling oil low pressure.
 Cancel Limits – To Cancel preset limiters (RPM Limters & Fuel Limiters)

Above mentioned Emergency overrides can be reset by pressing the corresponding

button again while the cancel function is still active.

7. M/E Slow Down Reset

Bring the telegraph to DEAD SLOW for the reset.

8. Emergency Stop Switch

In an emergency, use this switch to trip the M/E.
But after activating this Trip, engine can be restarted from Bridge only after resetting this
switch by pressing it again to release.

9. Others
Other alarms and indication lights are for SYSTEM FAILURES, which are self-explanatory.
In case such alarms activate, inform E/R or Duty Engineer.

10. Data Logger

This logs all the engine movements.
