Concept on sizing DC UPS meant for Control.

( Part A):

Why DC instead of A.C.? How it is sized?

The enclosed treatise has all the answers.
I want to say something about battery back up time. This is the time chosen between AC failure and
AC restoration. Too less time will cause underrated DC UPS not catering full requirement and too
long will cause overrated large DC UPS.

In onshore substation duty, when AC fails, the operator takes time to come from a remote place to
substation to investigate and brings back AC and DC UPS must cater the Control system in that time.
It depends on what transport the operator will normally use to reach the substation in questions, a
helicopter or a 4 wheel drive.

In offshore, the operator is on board. Accordingly back up time shall be much much less than what is
considered in onshore.

Normally, the engineers follow the project standard 8 hours/10 hours etc but few have guts to
question the basis.
