Q1 (a) Thermal resistance concept is applying the analysis of electrical circuit into the
analysis of heat transfer. Establish the relationship between the electrical resistance
and thermal resistance concept in conduction heat transfer for large plane wall.
(4 marks)

(b) A 20-m-long and 8-cm-diameter hot-water pipe of a district heating system is buried
in the soil 80 cm below the ground surface. The outer surface temperature of the
pipe is 60°C. Taking the surface temperature of the earth to be 5°C and the thermal
conductivity of the soil at that location to be 0.9 W/m·°C, determine the rate of heat
loss from the pipe.
(4 marks)

Q2 A 12 m long section of a 10 cm diameter circular steam pipe (Figure Q2) is completely

exposed the average temperature of the surrounding ambient air. The temperature
measurements indicate that average temperature of the outer surface of the steam pipe
is 75 °C while the ambient temperature is 5 °C. There are also light winds in the area
at 25 km/h. The emissivity of the outer surface of the pipe is ε = 0.8, and the average
temperature of the surfaces surrounding the pipe, including the sky, is estimated to be
at 0 °C.

(a) Determine the amount of heat lost from the steam pipe; and
(7 marks)

(b) Consider the steam pipe mentioned earlier in Q2(a) is not exposed to the light winds,
determine the amount of heat transfer from the steam pipe to its surrounding.
(7 marks)

Q3 (a) A 10-cm-diameter 100 W incandescent lightbulb operated in an ambient at 30 °C

(Figure Q3). The effective temperature of surrounding surfaces is also at 30 °C, and
the emissivity of the glass is 0.9. Determine the amount of heat rejected to the
surrounding by the lightbulb if the surface temperature of the lightbulb measured to
be at 70 °C.
(9 marks)

(b) Considering the incandescent lightbulb in Q3(a) is exposed to air flow at 0.01 m/s.
Determine if the heat transfer from the bulb to its surrounding will be significantly
affected by the new condition.
(3 marks)
