Unit Aims

Effective leadership of Health and Safety aims to equip learners with the ability to apply theoretical and
technical aspects of the methods which can be employed by company directors and senior managers to
effectively manage health and safety in an organisation. Upon successful completion learners have a
comprehensive awareness of the different viewpoints and approaches to effective leadership of health and
safety and the reasoning behind them. This unit forms part of the Managing Health and Safety Professional
Qualification.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit the Learner will know and understand the:
A. Importance of board level commitment to Health and Safety
B. Importance of Health and Safety within an organisation to meet regulations.
C. Methods of monitoring health and safety including keeping records and analysing statistics to obtain
an overall picture of performance.
D. Importance of external advice and identify methods of review to ensure an organisation stays ahead
of the minimum requirements and promotes good practice

Assessment Method

Level 5 Effective leadership of Health and Safety has a summative assessment in the form of a Remote
Assignment (RA). The RA is comprised of four long answer questions for with a timeframe of 10 business days
for completion. At level 5 learners will be required to:
(i) Analyse, interpret and evaluate relevant information and ideas related to Effective leadership of
Health and Safety.
(ii) Apply theoretical/ technical knowledge to demonstrate an understanding of Effective leadership of
Health and Safety to address defined questions that are complex.
(iii) Demonstrate a comprehensive awareness of different viewpoints and approaches to Effective
leadership of Health and Safety and the reasoning behind them.
(iv) Effectively communicate knowledge and understanding in written response(s).

The Total Qualification Time (TQT) for this unit is 200 hours.
The TQT is made up of the Guided Learning Hours (GLH) and the Non-Guided Learning Hours
(NGLH).
This is the number of hours requiring immediate guidance or supervision by the Centre,
GLH =120 including lectures, seminars, workshops, training and examination invigilation, tutorial
support including feedback on assignments.
This is the number of hours of directed non-supervised times such as homework, class
NGLH =80
preparation, background reading, group study, portfolio.
