LEARNING EPISODE 4 – MATCHING PROBLEMATIC LEARNING

SITUATION WITH PROBABLE ACTION

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this Learning Episode, I must be able to:

 Analyze teaching-learning problems prevailing in the classroom
 List matching action as a probable solution to the teaching-learning problems

Clarify Your Task

Matching Problematic Learning Situations with Probable Actions as Solution

Identifying a problem is a risky task. Action research begins with identifying a problem.
Oftentimes, it is one of the difficult things to begin with. When a researcher was asked, “Have
you identified a problem for your action research?”, common answer will be, “My problem is
that, I do not have a problem.” Ironical, isn’t it?

PARTICIPATE AND ASSIST

Cite three problematic teaching-learning situations/scenarios that you might have observed from
your class immersion.

Technical Issues

Lack of communication skills

Distraction

Suppose, the problem you have spotted is on ‘comprehension’. How can you assist your mentor,
after knowing that the learners have difficulty in comprehension?

Make a choice for your Action:

A. Conduct a tutorial lesson.
B. Show video lessons to help enhance comprehension.
C. Make a learning task to develop comprehension.

JUSTIFY YOUR CHOICE

In my point of view, I would like to choose the “Show a video lessons to help
enhance comprehension” We know that video lessons help learners to boost their
comprehension where in videos increase student engagement they will process and
remember it better because it has pause, rewind, or skip throughout the video to have
review particular areas.

NOTICE

What have you noticed on the problem identified above? Can there be more than one solution to
the problem? Why?

Those problems are easily to find solution. Learning effective communication skills
is a straightforward process that allows you to express yourself and improve ourselves.

A creative and innovative teacher can find one or more than one solution or answer to the same
problem. Each solution matches with the problem. The more solutions identified to choose
from, the better for an action researcher.

ANALYZE

Let us try to look into the following scenarios in the daily life of a teacher. This scenario might
also be similar to the class you have observed and noticed.

Scenario A: Miss Ma. Fe Ling A. Co is a grade four teacher in a typical elementary school. She
has forty learners in her class. One-half of them cannot classify animals into
vertebrates and invertebrates. She has been repeating the same science lesson for
two weeks, yet no progress was observed. This situation has been bothering Miss
Co.

1. What do you think is Miss Co’s problem?

I guess Miss Co is lack of examples so that their learners they don’t know
how to classify animals.

2. Suggest two possible solutions to her problem. Justify how can these solutions address
the teacher’s problem.

First of all, Miss Co needs to give more examples clearly and Group their
learners to make collaborate so that they gain a lot of information about their
classmates.

Scenario B: Sir Edward teaches in a disadvantaged urban community. Most of his learners
come from families that are disrupted, either with single parents or with their
guardians who stand only a parents. They are deprived of the necessary food,
clothing and shelter.

1. What do you think are Sir Edward’s probable teaching-learning problems?

Struggles of responsibilities
Lack of resources

2. Suggest two possible solutions to his problem. Justify how can these solutions address
the teacher’s problem.

Edward should reach out to government and address this issue. Government should be
able to help them little by little. They should start a program themselves, like recycling
plastic bottles and other materials and selling them to people who need it. This should be
able to provide them money to get what they need for their daily life.

REFLECT

After reading the two scenarios above, how would identifying problematic situations and finding
solutions to these problems help you to become a better teacher?

Those scenarios have two effects. The first scenario the learners confused and the
other side learners learn how to appreciate small things. If I become a teacher I need to
exert more effort to deliver the lesson properly and clearly.

Writing Action Research Prompts

OBSERVE

What problematic situation prevails in the classroom?

They become reliant of their teacher.

REFLECT

What changes do you want to achieve?

Doesn’t spoon feed your learner’s. We know that spoon feeding leads to poor
performance of the students also they become lazy who take little responsibility for their
own learning.

PLAN

What strategies will you use to improve the situation?

Step outside Your Comfort Zone.

ACT

What would be the title of your Action Research should you conduct the study?

REDUCING THE SPOON FEEDING AND MAKE A STUDY FEEDING
